The type of oil that should be used in the 2005 BMW X3 iS5W-30 or 0W-30 in all temperatures for both the 2.5 L 6-cylinder and 3.0 L 6-cylinder engine. The capacity for the vehicle iS6.6 quarts with a filter for both engines. Oil is used to help keep the engine clean and running smoothly. The oil and the filter should be changed every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. It is much sooner in most other vehicles which is usually around 5,000 miles or 6 months. The cost of a change is around $50 to $70 in labor fees which is a little more pricey than other car brands. It only takes about 5 to 15 minutes to complete an oil change.

BMW recommends using 5W-30 in both the 2.5L V6 engine and the 3.0L V6 engine in the 2005 X3. However, 5W-40 is an allowable alternative for either engine option.
