Chevrolet recommends usinG5w-30 synthetic motor oil for Your 2005 Tahoe. You will need 6 quarts of oil if You are doing an oil change. Synthetic oil is by far better for performance. It protects the engine due to lower levels of friction. Additives help clean the engine of deposits. And, fewer impurities mean it burns cleaner, thickens far more slowly, and has fewer deposits to start. It is recommended to go 7,500 miles between oil changes. You can extend Your engine life, get better gas mileage, and have better performance if You change Your oil regularly. You can change the oil Yourself, just remember when You change the oil to also change out the oil filter with a new one.

Wal-Mart Super Tech oil is an inexpensive but perfectly adequate oil. I change oil & filter every 5000 miles
