The kind of oil the 2005 Ford Explorer uses iS5w-30 except the 4.6l v8 engine which requireS5w-20. Having high quality oil is essential for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into issues with this fluid at some point. Bad oil can cause the engine to fail. A normal problem is a nasty burning smell. This needs to be looked into as soon as possible or the car might explode. Knocking noise may arise from the engine. You could experience poor gas mileage as well. Your oil needs to be changed eventually. Every 5,000 to 10,000 miles is a good rule of thumb. If You don't change it, there will be problems with the engine.

Of the three (3) engine options available on the 2005 Ford Explorer, both 4.0L V6 engines require 5W-30; while the 4.6L V8 requires 5W-20. All require the oil to be full synthetic oil.
