Depending on configuration, Your 2010 Volvo XC60 may have one of three different engines. The turbocharged 3.0 liter 6 cylinder will use 7.8 quarts of SAE 0W-30 full synthetic motor oil. BotH3.2L engine options use 7.8 quarts of the same. It's possible to substitute SAE 5W-30 oil in temperate climates (not dropping below -35 degrees Fahrenheit), or even SAE 5W-40; however, the latter is not recommended over long term applications. The higher Your oil's weight, the thicker it will be. This means that You're introducing friction into Your engine, and that's no bueno -- it causes premature wear and tear, and can lead to early engine failure. The SAE 5W-30 full synthetic swap is approved, but the 5W-40 has a bit of an asterisk; You should only do it when there are no better oil options.

Volvo recommends using SAE 5W-30 oil for the 2010 XC60. For extreme conditions (hot or cold), synthetic oils of SAE 0W-30 or 0W-40 is recommended.
