Each of the four trim levels of the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse comes with the same 3.6L V6 engine, which makes selecting the engine oil a breeze. Regardless of which configuration You're running, You'll use the same 6.0 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic oil. However, in a pinch, it's possible to substitute in SAE 5W-40 conventional, although this is certainly not advisable over the long term. The reason behind this comes down to oil viscosity. When You use oil with higher numbers in the weight, this means it's a thicker oil. Over time, this can introduce friction into Your engine, which leads to premature engine wear and tear. So although the SAE 5W-40 is a bit cheaper, try to avoid it whenever possible. You'll pay a few more dollars per oil change, but Your Traverse will thank You in the long term.

The recommended engine oil for the 2012 Chevrolet Traverse is a 5W-30 viscosity and oil that meets dexos1 quality standards. A 0W-30 viscosity could be used as well.
