The kind of oil the 2014 Subaru Forester takes iS5W30. Having high quality oil is important for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into issues with the oil at some point. Bad oil can cause the engine to stop working. A common problem is an awful burning smell. This needs to be inspected as soon as possible or the car might explode. Knocking noise may arise from the engine. You could experience poor gas mileage. Your oil needs to be replaced eventually. Every 5,000 to 10,000 miles is a good rule of thumb. If You don't replace it, there will be issues with the engine.

For the 2014 Subaru Forester models equipped with a turbo engine, Subaru recommends using SAE 5W-30 synthetic oil. If not available, conventional 5W-30 or 5W-40 can be used until the next oil change. For models not equipped with a turbo engine, Subaru recommends using SAE 0W-20 synthetic oil. If not available, conventional 5W-30 or 5W-40 can be used until the next oil change.

The 2014 Subaru Forester Touring edition non turbo requires 0W-20 oil. It says it right on the oil cap and in the manual. In a pinch 5W-30 is ok, but not the recommend type of oil.
