A check engine light may be illuminated due to a vacuum or emissions leak which can be as simple as a loose gas cap. In the 2011 Chevy Camaro, more serious reasons include a faulty O2 sensor or a failing catalytic converter. An O2 sensor often needs to be replaced if You suddenly notice a drop in fuel economy. It's responsible for monitoring the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust and conversely provides a key piece of data to the engine's combustion system in deterMINIng its air/fuELRatio. The cat helps transform carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and can become clogged and d***y over time. When the ECU senses imbalanced emission readings, the "check engine" light will be illuminated. If any one of these processes become interrupted the "check engine" light will switch on.

The check engine light on the 2011 Chevy camaro is a catch all that is designed to alert you to an issue with the vehicle. It gets turned on when the computer in the vehicle detects an error on the vehicle and stores a trouble code. You can read that code with an obd scanner and this will tell you what the issues is. Common issues can include a loose gas cap, the engine misfiring, d***y spark plugs, vacuum leaks, low oil pressure, and nearly anything else. The light can also come on to remind you to get the vehicle serviced if you are nearing a mile stone. The check engine light is not often a major issue, but it should not be ignored either.

The check engin light can be illuminated for any of 100's of reasons. If your not familiar with diagnosing, I would recommend finding a reputable shop or learn to diagnose the issues. FYI just pulling a code is not diagnosing.
