The recommended brake fluid on the 2001 Ford Focus is either DOT 3 or DOT 4. Some of the products that You can use are Prestone 12 Ounce DOT 3 Brake Fluid or Valvoline 32 Ounce DOT 3, DOT 4 Brake Fluid. Ford recommends using Super DOT 4 for optimum braking performance on Your Focus. Either way, You can use one or the other. The purpose of brake fluid is to aid the driver when they apply pressure to the brake pedal. It produces adequate pressure so that when You command the vehicle to stop, it stops. I would recommend checking the brake level every once in a while to prevent any problems with the braking system.

The brake fluid reservoir is located inside the engine bay, in the back near the driver's side fender. It should be filled with dot 3 brake fluid.
