The 2003 Ford Explorer uses Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oi in the 4.6L Engine, You can use an alternative oil as long as it has the same viscosity rating and meets Ford specification WSS-M2C153-H and is certified for gasoline engines by the API. The 4.0L Engine requires a different viscosity oil, it takes Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Super Premium Motor Oil, but a different oil can be used if it has the same viscosity and meets the specification WSS-M2C205“A. The oil level should be checked every time You put gas in the tank and have it changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. The 4.0L can hold 5.0 quarts and the 4.6L can hold 6.0 quarts when changed with the filter.
