The 2012 Chevy Malibu uses a power steering pump to circulate lubricants in and around steering gears so the wheels move with ease. PS fluid levels should be maintained to prevent damage to the pump and steering hydraulics. The Malibu's pump is lubricated by multi-vehicle synthetic PS for American vehicles. Acceptable brands include Prestone and Lubeguard, among others. You should be able to find the PS reservoir on the passenger side of the engine bay next to the coolant reservoir. The plastic container is usually marked by symbols or letters identifying it on a black cap. If the Malibu's reservoir levels need attention You will notice whining or high pitched noises while turning the wheel.

The 2012 Chevy Malibu does not have a power steering pump because it's powered by an electric motor located under the wheel, behind plastic molding found by the driver's knees
