The 2000 Ford F-150 uses mercon V transmission fluid. This indicates You will need to look for Dexron III or Mercon. You can find this transmission fluid in many retail locations, including automotive stores and online sales. You can expect to pay between $4 and $14 per bottle. To replace Your fluid, first look at the check valve on Your reservoir. Next, make sure it is fully empty. Remove the cap from the top of the tank. Using a funnel, pour the new fluid carefully into the reservoir until it reaches the fill line. This should take about 4 quarts. Finally, replace the cap, close the hood, and start Your engine. Everything should now be running smoothly.

In the Haynes Repair manual it says to use just MERCON automatic transmission fluid. I also own the 2000 Ford F-150(XL 4.6l V8 5 Speed). I went looking for Mercon atf and couldn't find it anywhere. There was only Valvoline Max Life Mercon V fully synthetic universal atf fluid. Read online that Ford had everyone switch to Mercon V. I guess they know what they are doing but who knows these days.
