According to the owners manual, Dexron-III is the only acceptable transmission fluid to in the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban. This may have been true at the time, but GM now recommends using Dexron-V ATF, as it has a lifespan that is nearly double that of Dexron-IIiAnd holds up under higher temperatures. The fluid level should be checked at least once per month. If the fluid level falls out of the normal operating range, add enough to bring it into range. If You have to constantly add fluid, this is an indication of a leak and You should have it inspected and repaired to extend the life of the transmission. Low fluid levels can overheat the bands and cause the transmission to slip.
