The 2009 Chevy Cobalt uses Dexron VI full synthetic automatic transmission fluid when You need to fill it. You should only use the recommended fluid because it is designed to protect the gears in Your transmission. I recommend that You check the transmission fluid every time that You change Your oil. You will want to make sure that it is full as well as free from debris. If there is debris in the fluid it will usually look sparkly or reflective due to the metal filings that are in it. If You notice that then You will want to flush Your transmission to make sure that any debris does not cause more damage down the road.
