While the 2001 Dodge Dakota comes with one of four different engines, only two of them are V8s -- You might either have the 4.7L or the 5.9L V8. Regardless, You'll want to use SAE 5W-30 motor oil at Your regular changes. It's also worth considering a high mileage option, since the 2001 model year is so far gone. In "emergencies", it's possible to use SAE 5W-40 conventional motor oil, but it's not recommended. It can lead to increased engine wear due to its inferior viscosity at operating temperature, which can in turn reduce the effective lifetime of Your engine. Your Dakota has already made it 19 years, so if I were You, I'd do everything I could to ensure it will last another 19 (or more).
