If You've got a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle, You're running one of three engines under the hood: You might have the 1.8L, 1.9L diesel , or 2.0L 4Cylinder engine. The smallest of the three engines requireS4.8 quarts of SAE 5W-30 synthetic oil, though SAE 5W-40 can be substituted for short periods. The 1.9L Diesel engine has the same capacity of the same oil, and the 2.0L 4Cylinder useS4.4 quarts of the same. Going back to the substitution -- it's not recommended, if its avoidable. Using an oil with a higher viscosity can introduce engine friction, which leads to premature engine wear and tear. Your Beetle is already old enough that You should consider high mileage options -- there's no need to age it farther.

A good oil option for the 2001 vw beetle is 5w-40 full synthetic.
