The 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 uses dexron-vi automatic transmission fluid. When shopping for fluid make sure to choose one that it meets these specifications. You should check the transmission fluid level at least once a month. Your owners manual will tell You where in the engine compartment it is located. Usually the handle of the dipstick is yellow or red. Your truck should be running and the engine warmed up. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and replace it. Check the warm mark. If the transmission fluid is low, carefully put more in with a funnel to prevent spills on the engine. After filling replace the dipstick and allow the truck to idel for a few minutes. Then check the level again to ensure it is now full.
