Oil is important because it will help to keep the engine clean and may extend the lifespan of the vehicle if regularly changed. Oil doesn't last forever so it needs to be changed every once in a while. For the Protege You should change the oil and the filter every 7,500 miles or so. The cost of an oil change is $20 to $30 in labor costs and extra for parts.
