The fuel pump relay on a 2003 Mazda Protege is located in the engine compartment fuse box. The first thing You need to do is open the hood, pull the hood release lever at the bottom left corner of the kick panel, on the driver side. Next, go to the front of the car and place Your hand between the top of the grill and bottom of the hood and activate the hood release latch. Lift the hood and set the prop rod into position to hold it up. Pull the tabs out on the lid to the fuse box to remove it and exposed the fuses and relays beneath it.

The fuel pump is located in the gas tank. To access it you’ll have to take the back seats out. Just pull up at the front of the back seats. They should pop off. Then, you’ll see four Philips screws, after you take that panel off there will be two fuel lines and two plugs. Disconnect those, be ready for some gas to come out of the hoses. After that take out eight more little Philips screws then pull the pump.
