The 2003 Nissan Xterra with a 3.3 L engine will have an oil capacity of 3.49 quarts. The recommended oil type according to the manual is SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil. You can still use a conventional oil of the same type if You prefer but the synthetic provides some useful benefits. Synthetic doesn't break down as quickly as conventional so You get better engine protection for a longer period of time. Synthetic also has fewer impurities in it and what that means is that You'll get less build up of sludge and other deposits on Your engine so it's cleaner. Regardless of Your choice, as long as You follow the maintenance schedule for oil changes You'll be going a long way in extending the life of Your vehicle. -

My 2003 3.3L V6 owners manual says 3.75 quarts on page 9-2. Measuring that out beforehand gets me right to the top of the hash marks on the dip stick.
