The 2004 Ford Explorer is fitted with a rear axle nut that measureS36mm hex. To access it, You'll first need to remove Your tire, which has a universal bolt pattern of 5 X114.3. This means that each wheel is secured with 5 lug nuts, each of which have thread measuring 1/2" - 20 UNF. The socket to remove those will be 13/16 inch. Contrast this to the front axle nuts, which are said to measure 30mm in diameter. However, many drivers report being able to use a 29mm socket to fit it more snugly, so note that Your results may vary. As always, when replacing the axle nut, it's important to torque it to factory specification as to not cause undue stress to Your bearings.
