EacH2004 Mazda RX-8 comes with the same 1.2L 2 cylinder engine, so regardless of Your trim level or other configuration, You'll always use the same engine oil; 3.7 quarts of SAE 5W-20 conventional motor oil is recommended. This is one of the few cases where synthetic may actually harm the engine's performance, so it's best to skip it in the RX-8. If You're in a bind and can't find 5W-20, it's possible to substitute SAE 5W-30 over the short term. This isn't recommended though, because over time this will introduce more friction to the engine's operation, leading to premature wear and tear and eventually, likely early failure. Therefore, it's always recommended that You go with the manufacturer's recommended oil type with the lowest weight, as it'll ensure the smoothest operation of Your engine.

My 2004 rx8 does not have that engine… it’s a 1.3L 2R rotary engine.

5w-20 conventional. Don use synthetic oil cause the rx8 burns oil by design
