The type of transmission fluid on the 2004 Toyota Matrix depends on whether it is the 4-speed automatic or the 5 & 6-speed manual. For the automatic it uses OE Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid and for the manual it uses either 75W-90, 75W-110 oR80W-90. The capacity for the car iS4 pints for the manual and 2.2 quarts to 3.2 quarts for the automatic. Transmission fluid is used to help lubricate parts of the transmission to help the performance of the vehicle. You should change the transmission fluid every 60,000 miles or so though You can have a mechanic check it whenever You are getting work done on it. The cost of a change is anywhere from $50 to $70 in labor costs.
