The neutral safety switch on a 2006 Chevy Cobalt is located on the side of the transmission housing near the top of it on the driver's side. It is a small black plastic box that will have wires going to it. The neutral safety switch is there to make sure that Your vehicle is in park or neutral before it starts up. This helps prevent damage to Your transmission. If Your transmission were in gear then there is a chance that the starter motor could damage the gears. Usually when the switch is going bad You will need to put the car in neutral to start it. Replacing it is fairly easy but it just takes time so it usually will cost $150 to $300.
