The 2006 Dodge Ram tachometer receives RPM data from the PCM which gets it from the crankshaft position sensor. This sensor is located towards the rear of the engine close to where the transmission mounts to the engine block. It doesnt go bad very often which is good because it is not easy to replace. There are also two speed sensors located on the transmission which can cause problems. The input speed sensor is located towards the front of the transmission and the output speed sensor can be found at the rear of the transmission. Other than that You may want to check the wheel speed sensors, each wheel has its own. These are mostly used for the ABS system but can cause problems with the gauges occasionally.
