The rear axle nut size for a 2006 Ford Explorer is 22 mm. The axle nut is what holds the hub to the axle. It is the hub on the disc behind the wheel that the wheel bolts onto. It is recommended that if You have to remove an axle nut, You should discard it and replace it with a brand-new one. Be sure while using a torque wrench and socket, tighten the axle nut according to the manufacturer's recommendations which is 180 ft/lbs torque. Vibration and movement of a loose axle nut can cause damage to the wheel bearing. Alternately, if that nut is too tight, that also can cause damage to the wheel bearing.
