For the 2006 Toyota Avalon, the manufacturer recommends Genuine Toyota Super Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant. This is A50/50 ethylene glycol based coolant, which is also an antifreeze for the colder months. It is always a good idea to use the suggested coolant made by the car maker. In the summer, if You fail to use the proper coolant, You expose Your car to overheating. When it overheats, it would often go off, to protect itself from possible damage and fires. It will not come on until it has cooled down. This can be really inconvenient for the driver. Similarly, in the winter, it could freeze up, if the proper antifreeze isn't used. So regular water is not ideal during the winter, as it is possible for it to freeze up easily.
