The 2007 Subaru Legacy came in two different engine variations; while both are 2.5 liter 4Cylinder engines, one is turbocharged and the other is not. The naturally aspirated variant requireS4.4 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil, while the turbocharged engine needs a little more of the same -- 4.5 quarts to be exact. In the absence of SAE 5W-30, You may substitute 10W-30 or 10W-40 over the short term, but it's not recommended. The reason for the recommendation against is that higher numbers in an oil's weight means a thicker oil, which introduces friction to the engine. Over time, this will cause wear and tear prematurely, and can eventually lead to premature engine troubles and even failure. Therefore, it's probably best to use the manufacturer's recommended oil with the lowest weight, even if it costs a bit more per change.
