The starter in the 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander is on the front of the engine slightly to the right of center. It's is just below the exhaust manifold and has a metal shield around it to protect it from the heat. To remove it, first disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench and move it to the side. Next, disconnect the air duct and move it out of the way. Now remove the heat shield, there are two 8mm bolts and one 10mm bolt, maneuver it towards where the air duct was to remove it. Disconnect the battery cable from the starter using a 12mm socket and unclip the electrical connector. Remove the two 17mm starter bolts, which are right up against the transmission, one on top and the other is on the bottom. You will have to wiggle the starter around a bit to get it out because of the tight space.
