The owners manual that came with the Buick La Crosse does not mention full synthetic ! It does say, you can use 5w30 but does not mention synthetic. Newer cars today use full synthetic or synthetic blend but the 2011 may not or may be OK with synthetic. The original oil filter may not be correct for synthetic oil. I have a ford F150 with a 5.0 engine and it requires a synthetic oil filter which has a different part no. Than a conventional oil filter.

The difference between conventional and synthetic isn't visual, but more microscopic. The molecules in synthetic are more uniform and tend to be smaller, allowing better protection to moving parts. Automotive manufacturers are recommending it over conventional for protection.
