The 2013 BMW 528I is equipped with run-flat technology instead of employing storage for a spare tire. Almost all modern BMW's are installed with run-flat tires, which means when experiencing tire damage, drivers are able to travel 100 miles on a damaged wheel before replacing. This is accomplished by re-enforcing the sidewalls to make them capable of supporting the tire when it loses pressure or goes flat. The system automatically provides more stability when driving on low pressures. Drivers able able to maintain speeds of up to 50 mph without compromising run-flat distance or durability. Although a BMW's run-flats provide more cargo space and a lighter ride, they have been criticized for wearing down more quickly due to softer treads, sometimeS6,000 miles earlier than conventional tires.
