The 2013 Chevrolet Sonic, which houses a 1.8 L engine has a total motor oil capacity of 4.8 quarts. For best results and optimal performance, Chevrolet recommends using a fully synthetic motor oil, although semi-synthetic or conventional oils are certainly viable. For best results, Chevrolet recommends using either a sae 5w-30 genuine motor oil, or an equivalent oil from an api certified provider. This greatly increases the longevity, efficiency and performance of the car. If using a synthetic oil, consider changing the oils once every 7,000 to 10,000 miles. If using an alternative oil type, changes should be made more frequently. Conventional oils, for instance, should be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

Because, no engine is perfect, there is a tolerance of 1 qt per 1,000 miles. According to the techs that I have talked to, the vehicle isn't considered to have a major oil leak/oil consumption until it loses oil at a higher rate than that. Losing 1 qt over the corse of 5k-10k miles is normal on a new car and phenomenal on an older car.

I have a sonic myself and I let it get down to about 18% and I put 1 quart of oil in it and it filled it up. How is this possible?
