You should only use Toyota super long life coolant in the 2016 Toyota Highlander. You can use an alternative brand if as long as it is a high quality ethylene glycol based non silicate, non-amine, non-nitrate and non-borate coolant. The Toyota coin is A50% blend of coolant and D ionized water. It is designed not only to prevent the engine from freezing in extreme cold temperatures, it will also lubricate the water pump. You should check the coolant level occasionally, at least once a month. If the coolant level is below the MINImum recommended level, add enough to bring it back into range. Before winter sets in if You live in colder climates, test Your fluid concentration to make sure it's not too watery otherwise You could blow freeze plugs out of the block.
