The 2014 Volkswagen Passat, with the 1.8L 4Cylinder turbo engine, uses A5W-40 oil, though You can go to A5W-30 if the climate Your vehicle's in is often quite cold. It's recommended that You only use synthetic oil; Your engine won't explode if You use a conventional, and You can mix (blend) them, but it's really worth the extra cost in these German vehicles. The synthetic adds additives that help keep Your engine clean and Your seals maintained. The capacity of Your vehicle iS5.8 quarts, after You put in a new filter, and You shouldn't put more than 22 pound feet of torque on the drain plug; for the Passat, You'll also want to replace the drain plug each time You change the oil.
