The 2008 Chevy Cobalt's transmission output or "speed" sensor is part of valuable chain of command that monitors the Cobalt's traveling speeds and transmits this information to the vehicle's ECU or main computer. The ECU, in turn, manages the timing of the transmission and gear shifting. The sensor should be found mounted to the backside of the Cobalt's transmission on the passenger side of the vehicle next to the firewall. Access can be gained from above or beneath the engine bay and above the right drive axle. Signs the speed sensor has failed include hard shifting, jerking motions while operating and a "0" speedometer reading. The average cost to replace the part averages $200-$250 in materials and labor.
