The 2006 Chevy Equinox temperature sensor is located on the back of the engine compartment near the water pump. It looks like a bronze plug with a black plastic outer coating. You can see it plugged in, with a wrapped wire running from it to the car. The sensor is responsible for making sure that the car is operating within the correct temperature range. If the car is running hot then it can eventually warp and crack the head gasket. This is a multi-thousand dollar fix, so You are advised to keep the temp sensor working at all times. They are easy to replace, and only cost a few dollars, 20 at most, so it is not something to ignore.

On 06 equinox LT fwd temp sensor is on drivers side of engine, toward firewall from thermostat housing, under black metal coolant line. Hot crossover exhaust runs 3 inches or so to right of it.
