The 2011 Ford Flex's starter is easy to see, but relatively difficult to remove. You can find it if You look just to the left of Your battery, underneath Your air intake tube. To access it, it's best to go in from the top. It's held in place with a pair of 13mm bolts, and removing them is perhaps one of the trickiest parts of the procedure. However, if You're confident, I'd still recommend completing the repair Yourself. You can find a remanufactured starter starting at $115, with new components around $200. However, if You go through a mechanic, the estimated cost of repair jumps to between $330 and $550, so DIYers will find a significant coSTSavings, with only a nominal amount of headache.

The starter motor on a 2011 ford flex is located above the transmission bell housing behind the engine.
