On the 3.6L engine of the 2012 Chevrolet Impala, You'll be able to find the thermostat housing near the engine block, at the end of the radiator hose. It's near the water pump housing, toward the rear of the engine. If You're looking to replace it Yourself, You should know that this is a fairly simple job. If You're replacing the thermostat alone, You're looking at around $20 for parts, and perhaps an hour or two in labor at most (including set up and tear down). If You're replacing the entire housing assembly, it'll set You back a little over a hundred dollars. This job may take a few hours, but it's still nothing that will be too intense for even a casual automotive enthusiast.
My water pump is on the front right side of the engine so I would guess the thermostat would be right above the water pump where the top hose connects
