The oil filter on a 2017 Chevy Equinox is located at the top of the engine under a round plastic cover that has a bolt on the top of it. The filter in this housing is used to clean the oil as it goes from Your oil pan into Your engine to lubricate the components. The main job of the filter is to make sure that Your oil stays clean because any contaminants can lead to scoring and permanent damage in Your engine compartment. You will always need to replace the oil filter every time that You change Your oil. Using an old filter with new oil can make Your fresh oil d***y and reduce its effectiveness at protecting Your engine.
