The shift solenoid is located inside the oil valve connected to the valve body. Solenoids are one of the most important components of an automotive transmission. They act as gates to control the flow of transmission fluid and thus enable the transmission to switch from gear to gear. They do this in response to electric signals sent to them by the transmission computer. And yes You can usually drive a car with a bad shift solenoid. Granted, it might not shift past a particular gear, but You should be able to drive it for a short period of time without causing any serious damage. If it did, then You'll know right away because the car won't move.
