The speed sensor on a 2004 Ford F-150 is located on the driver side of the transmission. In fact there are two speed sensors, there about 8 inches apart. The sensor towards the front of the vehicle is the input shaft speed sensor which is used to monitor the speed of the transmission' input shaft. The other one is the output shaft speed sensor and measures the speed ot the output shaft as it rotates. Both sensors communicate with the transmission control module, which determines when it should shift gears. The sensors also play a major part in the functioning of the cruise control. If one of the sensors goes bad, the transmission will have problems shifting, the shifts can be harsh can damage internal components such as the valve body, hydraulic lines, and potentially the gears.
