A humming sound can be part of normal operation, or cause for concern, depending on its severity and whether it's always been part of the driving experience or has juSTStarted happening. Like many Fords, the Escape's wheel bearings will begin to fail much sooner than other components, and You'll hear a dull humming sound, especially when You accelerate. However, if You're hearing the humming from around the back, near the gas tank, You've got a bit of a weirder problem... With Your evaporation system! Yes, it's pretty odd, and I haven't seen it often, but what happens is the gas tank gets air inside it because the valve doesn't shut off. Once You replace the evap's sensor box, that humming should go away.
That's it! It hums then stops, hums then stops. I thought it was an old car accelerating beside me. When I stopped, I noticed it was coming from near the gas tank. This was after a cold snap this summer.

A humming noise in the ford escape is commonly associated with a problem with the wheel bearings.
