There are a number of reasons that a fuel gauge in the Mazda CX5 won't work, but You can quickly narrow it down to some of the top few. First, have You scanned Your vehicle using an OBD-2 device Fault codes are very informative in letting You know where the error lies in the system. Since the fuel system has a few codes, it's possible that whatever error is causing Your fuel gauge problem is also throwing a code. The most likely causes are a bad instrument cluster, a failed sending unit, or a defective fuel tank float. Could You share some more information about how and when it failed Is it bouncing around, always reading empty, always reading full, etc This might help narrow down the cause.
I don't have an answer, but my fuel gage shows full and when I fill it up it overflows on the ground. I assume I have a defective float.
