2019 Lexus ES Review: Very Reliable Midsize Luxury Sedan With Low Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Sep 5, 2023

The 2019 Lexus ES lasts around 300,000 miles with relatively minor fuel pump and stereo system software issues reported. At $34,350 to $42,005, it’s a great value for a very long-lasting sedan with a luxurious interior for the money.

There is a ton of standard safety technology, the cabin is very quiet and isolated from the road and cargo space is also better than many competitors.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The stereo system is complicated to use with the trackpad, gear changes are slow in the transmission and the rear seats do not fold down.

Is the 2019 Lexus ES a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2019 is a great year for the Lexus ES since it offers a lot of new technology and improved performance from earlier years. Owner reviews praise the low ownership costs, comfortable seats, and the wood trim accents.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 9/10 – Interior materials are very nice for a sedan in its price range, the seats are comfortable on longer trips, cargo space is also excellent.

My Lexus es 350 is my favorite car I've ever had.
I love my Lexus es350 it is the most comfortable car. Everything is so easy to use because if the features on the steering wheel. I use all the safety features like back up camera and when I am leaning into another lane it vibrates to let me know. The car is very fast on pickup with a smooth ride. The music system sounds great too.

It is a smooth ride! The car design looks great.
No issues. I love the smooth ride, all the features such as leather seats, heat warming or cooling seats and steering wheels. The driver's seat is very comfortable and I have the option to change driving mode to economy. The only thing I do not like is that it does not come with full navigation.

I have never had any problems with this vehicle. Very comfortable and reliable. Bluetooth and safety features are very good. Exterior appearance is very impressive and paint is deluxe. Storage space is limited but I do not have a large family. So this is not an issue.

The 2019 Lexus Experience
It's a really good car I love the features and enjoy using it. One of the best features is the horsepower it has a lot while also making sure that you don't get too nervous while on the wheel. The apps that we can download are also very helpful because I can listen to my music while just staying in the car.

I love my Lexus hybrid ES
I really like all the attributes that it has. I can set the speed control and it keeps me in the lane and it keeps me four car lengths back from the car in front of me. That's one of my favorite things about it. Also it's a hybrid. It is a very comfortable ride.

Very uncomfortable front seats!
I have been purchasing Lexus for my company's cars for the last 7 years, and have been a very loyal Lexus customer. I currently drive a 2016 es 350, it is our 4th ES. I have always considered it the best value luxury sedan. I just drove a 2019 ES as a loaner while my car was being serviced. I can't believe it! Lexus put very narrow and uncomfortable sports seats in the new ES. They are so tight a 15-minute drive to my office was extremely uncomfortable! I had several other people sit in the seats and their opinion was the same as mine - terrible seats I guess for us it is "goodbye Lexus". We are moving to Mercedes. I highly recommend anyone considering the 2019/20 ES350 take a long drive and check out the seats before you decide to purchase.

Full of computer gimicks, lacking MORE BASIC functions
As usual, I bought the base model, without any upgrade. And this ES350 turns out MORE BARREN than a Honda Civic, or my 2002 Acura. There is no seat memory. WORST STILL. NO TRIP meter. There is supposed to be an ODO trip button on the steering wheel which allows you to switch between odometer, trip A and trip B. But it's not there. I am sure this is because the BARE BONE ES350 is completely barren. Yes. It has hundreds of computer functions. But I am not interested in them. I just want the most basic things: seat memory and trip meter. Who'd know to buy a LUXURY car I have to check all the BASIC functions? I really regret buying this car BIG TIME. ES350 base model is worthless. You must pay at least $2k more to be a luxury package. The design of ES350 is a big CHEAT!!

Connecting connecting via Bluetooth
I just rented a Lexus ES car and I I just rented a Lexus ES car and I have to tell you this has been the worst usability experience of any car that I have ever tried. Everything from not being able to find out how to scan from one radio station to the next, to being able to set a radio station on my list, to not being able to connect anything via Bluetooth. What a usability nightmare. Lexus, you should be ashamed of yourself. Fix your problems so people can use your systems. Even the cruise control works totally different than every other car I have used. So ridiculous.

Too complex to be comfortable.
I have driven Lexus for a long time and I usually love them. This car is not one I love. It is simply too technical I can't figure out how to work the majority of upgrades and even an outside company could not figure out how to reset the oil change manager. It's beautiful and has wonderful safety features, but the day to day driving needs are too complex for me.

  • Edmunds rates the 2019 ES at 3.9/5, enjoying the comfortable interior, but doesn’t like that the rear seats don’t fold down for extra cargo space.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Lexus ES Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Lexus ES include a worn-out fuel pump, premature brake wear, along with a frozen stereo system. Overall, these problems are better than other luxury sedans on the market, leading to low repair costs as the ES ages.

A worn-out fuel pump is the most widespread complaint on the 2019 Lexus ES, showing up within the first 20,000 miles. There is a massive recall covering a lot of Lexus and Toyota vehicles for the fuel pump which can fail suddenly. Lexus dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly in affected models for free.

Premature brake wear is another problem mentioned by some 2019 Lexus ES owners within the first 15,000 miles. Excessive brake force can cause the front brakes to wear down quicker than in some competitors. Replacing the front brake pads costs around $250, while a set of rotors is about $500 if they have been worn down.

A frozen stereo system has also been reported on the Lexus ES at around 2,500 miles. There are software updates available for the stereo system which improves its reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates for free as part of a normal service, while others charge around $50 for the labor.

There are three recalls on the 2019 Lexus ES, which is better than other midsize luxury sedans on the market. The two most serious recalls cover the fuel pump which may fail, and the third covers airbags. Lexus will replace parts on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2019 Lexus ES Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Lexus ES can last over 300,000 miles, which is much longer than other luxury cars on the market including the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Regular annual maintenance costs are more affordable than the competition, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $418 per year.

As a used 2019 ES reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the power steering pump for $590, A/C expansion valve costing $650, along with the transmission shift cable which costs $1,000.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is excellent, including a standard 8-inch central screen. Optional upgrades include a larger 12.3-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, along with a premium Mark Levinson stereo system.

Standard technology and safety features are better than many competitors, offering:

  • Rearview camera
  • Oncoming vehicle detection
  • Daytime bicyclist detection
  • Road sign assist
  • Lane tracing assist
  • Parking support alert
  • Pre-collision braking
  • Low-light pedestrian detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure alert
  • Steering Assist
  • Road Edge Detection
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Head-up display
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Parking sensors

They are thoughtfully designed to cradle the occupants, making even long journeys feel effortless and relaxed. The spacious interior further augments comfort, offering ample legroom and headroom to both the driver and passengers, guaranteeing everyone feels at ease during their travels.

Beyond just the tactile and aesthetic appeal, the engineering behind the 2019 Lexus ES prioritizes passenger comfort. The sedan’s suspension is masterfully tuned, adeptly cushioning the cabin from road imperfections and delivering a ride that is both smooth and poised. Lexus engineers have also made significant strides in noise reduction. What Are the Differences Between Years?

The seventh generation of the Lexus ES was introduced for the 2019 model year.

2015: Upgraded leather upholstery, a standard touchscreen, and more technology features added.

2016: Additional sound-deadening material used throughout the cabin, Bi-LED headlights, and an improved safety system.

2017: Updated stereo system with new graphics, and Lexus Safety System+.

2018: No updates from earlier years.

2019: Fully redesigned for the seventh generation with an upgraded V6 engine, improved technology, and a sportier F-Sport model.

2020: No major changes from earlier years.

2021: Small changes to the available options packages, and the new Black Line Special edition was launched.

How Does the Lexus ES Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Lexus ES is one of the best midsize luxury sedans on the market since it combines excellent technology features and better reliability ratings than most of the competition.

The Lexus GS is another midsize sedan offered by Lexus, which can be found for around $2,500 more. Where the Lexus GS stands out is with a sportier driving experience, while the Lexus ES is more comfortable on rough roads. We recommend the Lexus ES for most people unless you’re looking for the improved performance of the GS.

The BMW 5 Series is a competitor which can be found in the same price range used. The BMW 5 Series has more powerful engine choices available, while the Lexus ES has much lower ownership costs. We recommend the Lexus ES as a used sedan since it will last longer and has fewer complaints from owners.

I live my Lexus, but miss a few extras.
The es350 is a comfortable family car but I am the primary and sole driver. Lots of trunk space provides room for hauling my gardening supplies, plants, soil, mulch, etc. The roomy back seat provides plenty of legroom for adults while the front seats are fully adjusted backwards. With a pet sling in the backseat I can continue all of my gardening hauling purchases. And, of course, there’s plenty of room for my standard poodle to ride along. There’s a good amount of pep in the engine particularly in sport mode which I use often. The drive is very smooth and it is easy to lose track of your speed. The engine is Lexus quiet. Features are nice I have the full moon roof (over the driver and backseat ). Display is classy and visually appealing. A few negatives inclus=de glitchy voice recognition and somewhat limited communication capabilities. For instance there is no link to Alexa. There is also limited capability to send and receive text messages and email.

Lexus es 350: my thoughts.
My Lexus es 350 has excellent fuel efficiency and is very comfortable. It has leather seats and can travel 50 miles per gallon on average. I fill up on gas every 3 weeks. It has amazing features such as a tablet sized screen which can be used to connect your phone to and to play songs from the radio or to do a navigation. The pros and cons, convenience and comfortability of the 2019 Lexus.
It is a nice and comfortable car. Although I feel that it may not be the most convenient especially if you are planning on starting a family or have one already. The features are nice but again not very convenient. For it being an expensive car you would hope that there would be more features. Even the cup holders are not placed very conveniently. It is very small and only 2 people fit in the back and they will not be very comfortable because the person sitting in the front would have to adjust their seat for the people in the back.

I really like the ability to cool your seat on a hot summer day. Here in AZ it will get up to 120 degrees. When selecting the cool option I am quickly cooled down. I also really like the assist features like beeping when your too close to something while driving or parking. Lastly I like the built in GPS system.

Complete reliance on error codes to establish whether or not there is a problem and the lengths that Lexus Canada will go through to deny a problem exists and honour its warranties.
2019 es350 fsport. One problem came with the arrival of my vehicle. Blindspot monitor was malfunctioning. Because the dealer could not identify a computer Error code identifying the problem, Lexus denied there was a problem. It took about 5 months of creating videos showing the blind spot monitor malfunctioning before Lexus Canada agreed to replace the sensor. During this time Lexus Canada did not attempt at all to examine the monitor sensors to determine if they were working or not. The monitor has worked as it should since the sensor was replaced. Other than the fact that Lexus showed to me the trouble it would go through to deny a problem existed and therefore deny warranty coverage, the vehicle itself is great to drive.

Comfortable and luxurious.
I love the vehicle. It has excellent acceleration. It is very comfortable, even on long drives. I love the automatic rain sensor for the windshield wipers. Although some do not like the lane sensor, I really like it. Only issue I have is with the touchpad for the console.

Best car out I wouldn't expect anymore.
This car has no problems, very good engine, comfortable heating and cooling seats, led lights with heated steering wheel. It rides very smooth on the road feels like your floating, also a lot of horsepower. I enjoy it a lot. I would recommend it to all of my friends and family.

You should buy it because you’ll live it just like I do.
It is very easy and nice to drive and I really love it! It has reclining seats, it is comfortable, and my kids love it! It also has heating seats for the winter time so when it gets cold the kids have a blanket and the sing and they can charge their phones and stuff with all the car charges!

2019 Lexus es f sport great reliable car.
Great reliability car really comfortable and has great features like apple carplay and mark Levinson sound system. 305 horsepower makes this car ride smooth with f sport trim making it look sportier. 2019 model on the es has made this car really stand out for younger generation customers with the f sport trim.

I love my Lexus hybrid ES
I really like all the attributes that it has. I can set the speed control and it keeps me in the lane and it keeps me four car lengths back from the car in front of me. That's one of my favorite things about it. Also it's a hybrid. It is a very comfortable ride.

Lexus is by far the best vehicle.
Lexus is very reliable, quite, smooth drive and comfort ride ever. Features are great for my busy lifestyle. Remote start for those cold mornings. Direction assistant for those long trips. Great on gas. Customer service is awesome. They follow up every 2/3 months to get feedback.

Touch very dicicult to operate
Traded in my 2014 Es for this one. I,m a big Lexus/Toyota fan, however this touch pad is very difficult to operate. I feel that so far it’s causing a dangerous distraction. The interaction with Apple car play is inconsistent. Sometimes it’s hard to communicate with it by voice or touch pad. The 2014 joy stick was better but not by much.

I like that my car has driving assist, it is helped me so much on road trips.
I haven't had any problems with my vehicle so far, it is really reliable. I go to college and it is 8 hours away, long road trips back and forth put a lot of ware on a car. But my car has held up its own and does not make me worry one bit. This is a nice family car and luxurious car for its price. They have 3 different driving modes that help out a lot in severe or different conditions.

Heaven in a vehicle along life's highway.
The performance of this car is extremely first class. Ride is smooth. Park assist works superbly. Mileage is terrific. Love the style and design. A wonderful experience. My dealership has provided excellent service. The wide screen navigation system allows easier traveling.

Oil change inconveniences.
It need to change oil frequently which means that I have to go and visit the shop much more and spend more money on it. Sometimes the car will break down on the side of the road and stutter which I then have to get out and lift the hood to fix. This is sometimes a hassle if I am ever late for an event.
