Alex Showalter
May 30, 2023

The 2017 Lexus ES lasts around 300,000 miles with relatively minor brake wear and paint issues reported. At $29,325 to $35,980, it’s expensive, but well worth the money for one of the most reliable luxury sedans on the market.

likeFilled The Good
The cabin is very quiet, there’s plenty of room in the rear seats and a lot of standard safety technology.
dislikeFilled The Bad
It’s not as sporty as other luxury sedans, the touch pad interface is frustrating to use and the suspension is floaty.

It's a car that is not expensive to maintain and is a very reliable car.
The Lexus that I drive is the best car I ever drove, I never had a problem with this car, maybe because it's a new car, but I had a Lexus before for 7 years and I love it. My car has a premium package, wood interior trim, memory system for the driver seat, mirror and steering wheel positions and remote keyless.

Newer is not always better.
It is too big. It has a terrible blind spot. It shifts oddly. It also does not have near the features of my last Lexus, such as remembering different drivers seat preferences, seat coolers, a sunroof and more. It also has a lot of issues with the locks. I am not a fan of this new model.
accountCircle Amy A
The ES350 has the best reliability in the industry.
The features on the car are wonderful. I love the heated and cooled seats, the blind spot monitoring, lane departure, back-up camera, accident prevention, etc. I wish the car were smaller and I wish it had fold-down/pass through back seats.
accountCircle Rhiannon M
Just ok for me. Not as comfy as a luxury car should be.
It is an attractive car - but my husband bought it and feels a little old fashioned. It is comfortable except for the seats. Headrests pitch your upper body forward so you feel hunched often. I have reversed my head rest so I can sit upright. Love the seat warmer and coolers. The air vents do not isolate very well though. If I have it on defrost only, it still pumps heat out of the main vents. Stereo system is nice... A little muffled effect though. Performance is good. Sport mode makes it even better. Trunk is nice and roomy.

What Do Critics Say About the Lexus ES?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 Lexus ES offers a pampering driving experience, with very high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 2017 ES at 4.6/5, enjoying the smooth V6 engine, but doesn’t like the controls for the navigation system.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Lexus ES a 4.6/5, praising the comfort and dependability, but owners don’t like the lack of performance.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Lexus ES Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Lexus ES include premature brake wear, chipping paint, along with some noise from the wheels. Overall, the problems are very minor compared to other luxury sedans, leading to low repair costs as a Lexus ES ages.

Premature brake wear is the most widespread complaint on the 2017 Lexus ES, showing up at around 15,000 miles. If you are heavy on the brakes, they tend to wear down quicker than in some other cars. Replacing the brake pads costs around $250, while a new set of rotors is an additional $500.

Chipping paint, particularly along the front bumper, is another problem mentioned by some Lexus ES owners in the first 10,000 miles. The only correct way to fix chipped paint is to repaint the affected areas, at a cost of roughly $1,000 per panel. There are some places that offer touchup kits, although they’re not as long-lasting as a repaint.

Noise from the wheels has also been reported by some owners at around 30,000 miles. Wheel bearings wear out in some cases, and just need to be replaced as part of normal wear and tear. Changing out the wheel bearings costs around $400, depending on local labor rates.

There’s only one recall on the 2017 Lexus ES, which is better than other luxury sedans on the market. The recall covers a loose lock nut on the tie rod which can cause it to separate. Lexus will replace the nut on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2017 Lexus ES Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Lexus ES can last around 300,000 miles, which is longer than other midsize luxury sedan choices like the BMW 5 Series. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than other luxury cars, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $570 per year.

As a used 2017 Lexus ES reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the coolant reservoir for $290, the vehicle speed sensor costing $400, along with the engine oil sensor which costs $500.

accountCircle Anna P

Yes. I haven't had any major issues with getting a regular oil change and maintenance. My only complaint is that the tires wore out earlier than I expected.

accountCircle Karen F

It is very reliable and the only problem I have is with the traction in the snow/ice - slips in the ice and snow. Otherwise I love the car.

accountCircle Amanda B

Yes I've had it for 2 years and only had routine maintenance done and the labor isn't too expensive it's really a reliable car

accountCircle Jennifer H

The Lexus ES is very reliable. No problems so far in driving it. Good gas mileage, and very efficient car

Entertainment technology is great with a standard 8-inch touchscreen which has Siri Eyes Free integration along with the Lexus Enform app suite. Optional upgrades include a high-powered Mark Levinson surround-sound audio system.

Standard safety technology is excellent, offering:

  • Rearview camera

  • Pedestrian detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist

What Engines Come In the Lexus ES?

The standard powertrain is a 3.5-liter V6 engine that generates 268 horsepower at up to 24 MPG. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth and efficient gear shifts. According to Lexus, this combination allows the ES to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds.

What Colors Does the Lexus ES Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Lexus ES?

The 2017 Lexus ES is well-regarded for its comfortable and luxurious ride quality. The cabin is spacious, and the seats are designed with comfort in mind. Both the front and rear seats provide plenty of headroom and legroom, accommodating tall passengers comfortably. The seats are padded with high-quality materials, and they offer excellent support, making them ideal for long drives. Some models even feature heated and ventilated seats for additional comfort.

The Lexus ES is equipped with a sophisticated suspension system that effectively absorbs road bumps and imperfections, providing a smooth and serene ride. Noise insulation is superb on this model, effectively keeping road and wind noise to a minimum, enabling occupants to enjoy conversations or the high-quality audio system without disruption.

How Much Storage Space Does the Lexus ES Have?

The 2017 Lexus ES 350 offers a decent amount of storage space for a luxury midsize sedan. Specifically, its trunk capacity is measured at 15.2 cubic feet. This trunk space is competitive in its class, and the wide opening makes it easy to load items.

Regarding practicality, 15.2 cubic feet is spacious enough to hold an average-sized suitcase or multiple carry-on bags, making it an excellent option for long trips or airport runs. Additionally, the Lexus ES can accommodate around 3-4 full sets of golf clubs or a large stroller, making it a suitable vehicle for family outings or leisure activities.

For smaller items, there’s also an array of storage spaces inside the cabin. It includes door pockets, a reasonably-sized glove box, and center console storage, ideal for personal belongings like wallets, phones, and small bags.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The sixth generation of the Lexus ES was introduced for the 2013 model year.

2015: Upgraded upholstery and a standard touchscreen, upgraded stereo system now has more technology features as well.

2016: Increased sound-deadening throughout the cabin, new Bi-LED headlights, and updated safety system.

2017: Updated graphics on the stereo system, new menu shortcuts, and Lexus Safety System+.

2018: No major changes from earlier years.

2019: Fully redesigned for the seventh generation with a more powerful V6 engine, upgraded technology, and F Sport trim.

2020: No changes from earlier years.

2021: Small changes to optional features, new Black Line Special Edition launched.

How Does the Lexus ES Compare to the Competition?

The 2017 Lexus ES 350 is an extremely nice midsize sedan, offering plenty of luxury features, technology, and outstanding reliability ratings which helps it earn our recommendation over many competitors.

The Lexus GS is a slightly larger sedan offered by Lexus, which costs about $3,500 more. Passenger room is slightly better in the Lexus GS, while the Lexus ES offers more standard technology. We recommend the Lexus ES for most shoppers, although some prefer the sportier driving experience of the Lexus GS, so it’s worth testing both out.

The Mercedes E-Class is another midsize luxury car which can be found starting at about $2,000 less. Performance is better in the Mercedes E-Class since it has more powerful engine choices, while the Lexus ES is much more reliable. We recommend the Lexus ES for used car buyers since it‘s more affordable to own long-term.

My car is like a sailboat. You start the engine and it is 'whoosh.' So quiet and smooth. I love it. As long as it continues to have a CD player in the car, so I can read CD books, while I drive, I will never look to another brand. Zi due for a new one as soon as my warranty runs out - next year.

Great for taller people - very comfortable!
This vehicle is very comfortable for taller people who have difficulty with smaller cars. The features are very nice and the visibility is nice. The dashboard is good but the automation system (navigation, control panel, audio, etc) could be easier to use. Trunk has good space. Maintenance costs are generally low. All around - a great car and I would buy it again and/or strongly consider upgrading to a newer model when I am ready to buy again.

It still has a CD player, but not sure how much longer they will include it the coming models. It's a real pain having to change CDs will on a highway, but when you're reading a book, it becomes necessary. I'd love to have the 6-disc player it used to have!!

This is a very reliable vehicle that is very comfortable to drive and be a passenger in. It also has a surprising amount of trunk space and legroom in the back seat. Audio is very impressive, blind spot lights and rear view camera make you feel very safe,

My beautiful 2017 Lexus es 350.
I love my car. I have had no issues with it at all as I make sure that I have it serviced at the required service times. The ride is very smooth and noticeable by others that drive a different type car. The sound system is great and adjustable to fit your taste. I love the fact that it uses regular gas and the gas mileage is decent.
