Alex Showalter
Jan 21, 2022

The 2008 Nissan Altima is a midsize car available as a coupe or sedan with a price range of $5,552 to $7,788. A higher purchase price paired with transmission problems makes the Altima a car buyers should avoid.

The optional V6 engine has great power for the class, the steering is responsive, and interior materials are better than other budget-friendly midsize cars.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Expensive transmission failures are common, the cabin is smaller than a lot of the competitors, and standard safety features are lacking.

2008 Nissan Altima: Quick Overview

  • New features for the 2008 model year include a new coupe body style.
  • According to J.D. Power reliability ratings are average, however, transmission failures are common, leading to an average lifespan of around 150,000 miles, shorter than some competitors.

It rides smoothly & has great pickup.
The biggest problem is the tire gauge light keeps coming on and dealer does not seem to get it fixed.

Very popular car low maintenance long-lasting car.
Nissans are dependable, reliable, safe. They handle curves well, good on gas, low on maintenance. It is an extremely popular car so many on the road. I love my Nissan. The look is sleek and sophisticated, they are quiet cars as well. If you take care of them they will take care of you.

Best car I have ever owned!
We have a issue with the power steering at the moment. What I love is the quality of the vehicle. I love the look of the car inside and out. Inside I love the heated seats the options on the steering wheel and the gas mileage is great.

The heated seats and eight cup holders
The car is really reliable and is excellent on gas as well. It's can go for many miles on a full tank. It takes about $45-50 to fill the car up but it last a long time. The seated are comfortable. The front seats have an option where they can have choice to have them heated. Nice sound system. It has a 6 CD player in the radio, and aux and two ports to plug in the car charger. Also have 8 cup holders in total

High quality long lasting reliable vehicle!
It is 11 years old and still drives like new! The interior has taken a beating but still looks like new. I just get it serviced every 4 months and it hasn't had any problems. Gas mileage is good. It is comfortable to drive for long rides. Offers plenty of legroom for tall people.

Very spacious and great for family.
The Nissan Altima is one of the best family cars and traveling cars. It is good on gas and is very spacious. It's great for putting big things and groceries and such in it due to the spacious back/trunk. It's not a compact car but is easy to maneuver and control.

A great first car! Very reliable, easy to control, and great gas mileage!
A Nissan Altima is a great first car to own. The breaks are responsive but not too responsive, and it is able to increase speed without much effort by your foot. The gas mileage is impressive to me, as I usually fill up once every two weeks. The car is up to date, just does not have touch screen which would be nice.

Not my favorite vehicle by far but has a good sound system.
Dash is melting transmission is slipping I've put 1400 dollars in it and it is broke down again new radiator new valves 2x new coil packs 2x new water pump new condenser ac blows half the time would not buy another one unless it was brand new I bought a pre owned I've only had it a year. Though most of the problems are on a recall list and when I called about the recall I was told my car wasn't on the list according to the vin number.

Falling apart quickly and costing more than it is worth.
Electrical issues and other code issues. Transmission is not consistent, headlights always causing problems as well as emission issues. All around bad purchase and definitely will not do it again.

08 Nissan Altima. 2008 Nissan Altima has major transmission issues.
Transmission went out once already, not a reliable vehicle. No recall on transmission but extended the warranty mileage to 120,000. No where on website did it volunteer this information. Had to google it and call corporate. Trunk light out. Not a normal bulb. The car is oxidizing and we don't live near water. . Company not to truthful either.

That it has been super reliable for the 10/almost 11 years that I have had it.
Vehicle has 160k miles. Vehicle has been super reliable, just poorly maintained. Due to low maintenance I am having issues with the struts, tie rod ends and I have an oil leak from the engine.

Interesting detail is the car is not what I expected.
It has too many mechanical problems as soon as the warranty was up it started giving me problems. , Nissan use to be my favorite, but it was made better than it is now. . . My car sounds like an old truck. I have been doing repair work since 116k miles. Not what I expected out of Nissan.
accountCircle Sydney S
It is a very smooth drive.
The dashboard is melted because of exposure to direct sunlight. The a/c goes out frequently and costs a lot to fix every time. The two doors make it difficult to travel with multiple people. Also, the tire pressure light is always on all the time even when I fix the tire pressure in my car the light stays on, apparently it is an issue with Nissan.

Great car for a young professional
The durability of the car is great, but the frame is weaker than I hoped for. I continue to get dings and dents all over my car just from things like going to the store and having someone open their door into mine. Mechanically I have never had issues. It runs great and has been a very dependable car for me and my husband.

What Problems Does the 2008 Nissan Altima Have?

The 2008 Nissan Altima has more problems than other midsize cars on the market, and a lot of them are mechanical. The newer 2009 model has fewer complaints from owners, but is still not a great choice.

A melting dashboard is the most common complaint from owners. In hot weather the plastic and leather on the dash melts. There was a class action lawsuit in the state of Florida, where Altima owners can have their dashes replaced. If your car is not covered by the lawsuit, a replacement costs about $1,300.

Transmission failures are a very frequent problem, too. The continuously variable transmission is a weak spot on many Nissan vehicles, and when they fail the only solution is to replace the entire assembly. A replacement costs about $3,800, depending on local labor rates.

A blown head gasket is another problem owners have encountered over the years. Head gasket failures can destroy an engine in some cases. Installing a new head gasket costs about $2,400, and a complete engine replacement is more than $4,000.

There are 4 recalls, which is better than some other cars from the same year. Recalls include the body control module, transverse link bolt, occupant classification system control unit, and portable GPS overheating. Most serious are transverse link bolts since failures can lead to a crash.

What is the 2008 Nissan Altima Worth?

The 2008 Nissan Altima is more expensive than some competitors on the market with a price range of $5,552 to $7,788, depending on the model and mileage. When new, the price range was $18,620 to $28,670. Depreciation is average for the class, and continues at about 15% per year as the car ages.

What Are the Models & Specs?

  • 2.5 is the stripped-down base model with 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, power windows and locks, keyless entry, as well as cruise control.
  • 2.5 S is a more common entry-level model and adds air conditioning, a 6-speaker stereo system, AM/FM/CD playback and a 3.5mm AUX input.
  • 3.5 SE is next in the lineup and has a larger engine, 17-inch alloy wheels, power folding mirrors, automatic headlights, a power driver’s seat, and wood trim throughout the car.
  • 3.5 SL is the flagship choice with leather seating, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, Xenon headlights, and Bluetooth connectivity.

How Long Will the 2008 Nissan Altima Last?

A properly cared for 2008 Nissan Altima will last about 150,000 miles, which is shorter than some competitors. Repair Pal estimates the regular annual maintenance costs to be more affordable than some competitors though, and $380 per year.

Some common problems owners encounter as the Altima ages over 100,000 miles include transmission failures costing over $3,000, ABS control modules at around $800, and worn-out suspension components which cost about $400.

accountCircle Kevin M

I have never had to do anything to the car outside dog normal routine maintenance. It has 150k miles and still runs great.

accountCircle Je-Vaughn M

The 2008 Nissan Altima is a very reliable car that can take you around the world and back as long as it is regularly maintained.

accountCircle Meske O

Its reliable especially with proper upkeep. I haven't had any problems with it except an oil leak and I am not aware of any problems with the Altima and haven't had any major problems with mine.

accountCircle Gina A

Yes, very reliable. I have only had issues with the breaks and I am noticing a little bit of rust but that is bound to happen over the years living in a city with 4 different seasons.

accountCircle Blenda K

No problems, accept a couple lights that comes on, besides that it has never broke down on me. So no other problems besides that.

accountCircle Heather F

Yes, it is reliable. Only thing is that it takes a lot in gas. Although I have heard that Altimas typically have problems with their transitions.

accountCircle Rahul A

It is reliable. The doors get filled with water when it rains and snows. Sometimes the back tires get a little bit loose, could be because of the age of the car. Nothing too big which cannot be fixed.

accountCircle Ashley M

Yes, the Nissan Altima 3.5 se is reliable. I feel comfortable and safe driving the car. It is push to start, so it makes it easier for me to just start the car up and let the car heat up until I am ready to drive. I am able to lock the doors, and still let my car heat up which is super cool.

What Technology & Safety Features Are Included?

Technology is basic in the 2008 Nissan Altima, but is average for the class and age.

  • The base technology includes an AM/FM/CD stereo system with AUX playback, and 6-speakers.
  • Optional upgrades include a 9-speaker stereo system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 7-inch touchscreen navigation system.
  • Standard safety features include airbags and antilock brakes. Optional upgrades include stability and traction control on the 3.5 models.

What Engine Options are Available?

Performance is better than average in the 2008 Nissan Altima. The optional V6 engine takes the car from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds.

  • The base engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder with 175 horsepower.
  • An upgraded 3.5L V6 is available and has 270 horsepower.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the Altima?

The 2008 Nissan Altima is a midsize car available as both a coupe and sedan. Passenger room is adequate in the sedan, but is not class-leading. In the coupe there is limited headroom in the front seats, and legroom is very cramped in the back seats. Cargo space is better than other midsize cars with 15.3 cubic feet of room in the trunk, enough space for 4 suitcases.

How Does the 2008 Nissan Altima Compare to Other Cars?

Ranking 6th out of 13 midsize cars based on owner reviews, the 2008 Nissan Altima is near the middle of the class.

A highly rated competitor is the Honda Accord, which is slightly more expensive. The Honda is slightly more reliable, and has better technology available. Where Nissan wins out is with a more engaging driving experience, and higher-quality interior materials. Overall, both cars are bad choices for the 2008 model year since they both have serious mechanical issues.

Another close competitor is the more affordable Hyundai Sonata. The Sonata has a nicer interior with more luxurious materials, and better reliability ratings. On the other hand, the Nissan offers significantly more power, and has an optional coupe. In the end, the Sonata is a better choice because they are more affordable to own and don’t have transmission failures.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Nissan Altima a Good Car?

No, the 2008 Nissan Altima is not a good car based on information from 423 verified owner reviews and 16 government and automotive websites. Positives include a sportier driving experience than other midsize cars, and good styling for the class. The downsides outweigh them all, though, with expensive transmission failures, and a smaller cabin than the competition. Overall, the 2008 Altima is a car buyers should avoid since there are better choices on the market.2

Best vehicle to purchase and own.
My car is very reliable and dependable. I have never had any problems at all. I have all leather interior and it is in perfect condition. I have a sunroof and heated seats. I love the heated seat feature in the winter. My car also has a push to start feature. That is a nice feature to have so you do not have to dig your keys out of your purse. It drives very smooth and it is very comfortable. It also has dual heating and cooling controls.

Great gas mileage, great space especially if going out of town on vacation.
Definitely a great car, gets great gas mileage. Seats are cloth and very comfortable (wish they were heated though). Decent size as well, decent amount of space in the backseat as well as the trunk. The only problem I have seen with mine and heard of in others, is the transmission will sometimes slip when the car is switching gears.

My vehicle has amazing leather seats and holds gas great.
The vehicle does not really give me any issues. It is very reliable the only problem it has given me is with my air. Which I really need especially in the summer. Every time I go to get it fixed it messes back up like 2 weeks later. I might have to take it to someone else. My car has leather seats which is good unless it is very hot but it does not hold stains or smells. It also holds gas very good it does not take much to fill it up. I could put like 40 dollars in there to fill it up.

The car is great price. It is extremely reliable. The car has been in our family for 11 years, it's never been in an accident, it runs great. There are over 140,000 miles on it and it still runs as good as it did when I purchased it. Maintenance is minimal. Standard oil changes every 3,000 miles, etc. In the 11 years it's been in our family there have been very few parts that needed replacing.

I like the gas mileage on the car!
The main problem that I have had with my vehicle is that after 2 hours straight of driving it, the engine starts to overheat. This causes the car to slow down on its own to make it safer. I love the seats, radio area, and pretty much everything else about the car. It holds pretty good gas mileage too! If anything is wrong, Nissan is pretty helpful with figuring it out. I had to get my tires aligned because they were out also.

I own a 2008 Altima SE It is my 3rd Altima SE although I bought this car with 240k as a well maintained vehicle from auction for 5000 cdn, I have since put another 100k on it. I did the brakes and CV's. I also replaced the rad and thermostat. I recently lent it to my son and it experienced transmission problems. The line pressure solenoid A was identified with a code reader. I want another two years out of it so I am replacing the entire cvt valve body for not much more than a single solenoid. I will clean the magnets, pan and of course add new CVT fluid. It's on a car hauler trailer headed back home. The trany is so bad we had to help push it on the trailer with another car.

Very good car, good mileage low maintenance.
It is quiet. I have driven it for six hours filling the tank before I left Dallas TX and when I left port Arthur TX to come back to Dallas. It is heavy and can handle strong winds with ease. Changes lanes with ease, barely turning the steering wheel. I added run deflectors on all windows because if it is raining when you go through the drive through at a fast food restaurant you will get wet. When the rain hits the front window it does not distort your vision. I am a cup holder person, I have three middle console and one on each door. I have used the console as a cooler when traveling to keep sandwiches cool. You wrap an ice pack in a plastic bag and sit sandwich on top of ice pack. I love the space, no closeness of passengers. Trunk holds a lot of stuff. I like that it tells you when something is wrong and where it is. I love every aspect of this model of car.

I own a 2008 Nissan Altima that I have had no problems with other than needing to put brakes on it when it got to about 70, 000 miles. It has been very reliable, always started and gets about 26 miles to the gallon. It has a very smooth ride though I wish it were a bit quieter on the road it is still better than other cars I have owned. It has a keyless entry, you carry a remote with you. My car has about 140, 000 miles and is in decent shape as long as you provide routine care. Within the first 3 years, the transmission had to be replaced, it was still under warranty. My brakes locked up to where I could not start the car, had to repair that. Also, 3 out of my 4 automatic door locks went out at the same time. I find it very interesting that a 10 year old car can be in such good shape.
The low tire pressure light has been on since I got it. But, the tire pressure was checked and it is fine. It is just annoying to see that on for no reason. Might be a faulty sensor. I am really not sure. Other than that, the car is a good car. It is ok on gas. Takes about $40 to fill the tank. And I can literally drive an entire two weeks off of a tank of gas. I get regular oil changes and other required maintenance. I treat my car like a baby. I have had it since February 2018. So, not too shabby for a 10 year old car.

It's a nice, safe car that gets me where I need to be
I like that it had all of the features I was looking for - aux hookup, sunroof, push to start button. I would like a newer car though because it's starting to make noises that make it sound super old and cheap

Handling, reliability, and comfort.
Problems: the biggest issue with this vehicle is that the dash melts in the sun. It gets sticky and tacky, and over time it has basically ruined. Performance: this car is fantastic and fun to drive. The 3.5L coupe that I have is zippy and has a lot of acceleration for an Altima. It handles very well. Reliability: I have had no problems at all with this car being reliable. With dedicated maintenance, this car is now 11 years old and still drives great. Comfort: front seat comfort is fantastic with plenty of legroom. Head room is fine for me (5'6'), but if you are very tall you might hit your head on the ceiling if you hit a speed bump. Back seat comfort is fine once you are in the seat, but climbing back there is difficult in the coupe. Features: with the 3.5L SE trim, I have the sunroof, cruise control, a decent stereo, and a fair bit of power. The only thing this car is lacking is bluetooth (but it's an older car).
