2019 Ford EcoSport Review: Unreliable Compact SUV With High Repair Costs As It Ages

Alex Showalter
Sep 13, 2023

The 2019 Ford EcoSport lasts around 120,000 miles with some serious engine and brake system problems reported. At $14,250 to $21,999, it’s cheaper than other small SUVs, but not worth buying when you’ll spend a fortune fixing it if it breaks.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
Cargo space is good for a small SUV in its price range, the Sync 3 stereo system has great features and the all-wheel drive system works well in the snow.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine choices are both weak, the suspension is bouncy on rough roads and visibility is poor with the large window pillars.

Is the 2019 Ford EcoSport a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2019 is a bad year for the Ford EcoSport since there are a lot of mechanical issues that are expensive to fix. Owner reviews complain about limited power, broken interior panels, and a lot of warning lights.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are relatively cheap and basic, the seats are supportive on long drives, cargo space is also decent for an SUV of its size.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are still some widespread engine and transmission issues found on the 2019 EcoSport. Models from 20182020 have a lot of problems, while 20212022 are more reliable.
  • Performance 6/10 – The base three-cylinder engine is very slow for a small SUV, while the optional four-cylinder motor is similar to the competition.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2019 EcoSport is safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests, it comes standard with a rearview camera while parking sensors and blind spot monitoring are available as optional upgrades.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 28 MPG, giving 386 miles of range out of the 13.8 gallon tank. Gas costs are $20 cheaper than average at $190 per month.
  • Value 7/10  – The 2019 Ford EcoSport is cheaper than many other small SUVs on the market, but rapid depreciation and some expensive issues make it a bad value.

Echo sport makes driving fun!
My vehicle is very reliable and performs great. Has easy handling and a comfortable steering wheel. The driver's seat has enough functions to make you quite comfortable. The dash and information screen are easy to reach and it has a great sound system.

My vehicle that I have been wanting.
It has a great performance so far because it is new and has a great comfort and features. It has awesome features like GPS and advance settings that was not in my old car. I love the way they design it its very unique and very new. I am happy with my car and in love it.

2019 ford eco-awesome ecosport!
My everyday car, great gas mileage! I love the audio system, the automatic Bluetooth hooks right up to my phone, so it makes playing Pandora and amazon music stations a breeze! The sensor system is so helpful too, it definitely comes in handy for keeping an eye on my tire pressure and my oil life! The auto-stop function is annoying to get accustomed to but it definitely serves it is purpose. I actually enjoy the fact that it is much more compact, however it also makes it a little more scary to turn on tight corners. Definitely increases the chances of rolling the vehicle but it does not take long to get used to driving. Also cannot forget to mention the heated seats and steering wheel! Makes it so much more comfortable for winter driving! I love my ecosport!

Drives smoothly. It comes in multiple great colors, my favorite is the ruby red!
My ecosport is amazing! It runs smoothly and does not require as much gas as my older cars did. The seats are quite comfortable and easy to relax in on a longer drive. Although it is on the expensive side, this care is worth the money and is worth the money!

Lightweight, dependable, titanium ecosport se.
Cadillac converter needing software update. The car does not come with a spare tire. Love the leather seats. Love the sunroof. Great vehicle to have. Very dependable, long lasting, lightweight, and sporty. Love the heated seats and the heated steering wheel.

Great for a first time SUV driver.
I love my ecosport. I went in to buy an escape. Test drove that one then they suggested this one as it was my first SUV. I had driven sedans up until then. It has 5 seats that are very comfortable. The front seats have seat warmers which is perfect for the cooler months. It has Bluetooth capabilities with the ability to download an app to hook your phone up to your car in order to use maps. Etc for safer driving. The trunk is a bit small but the back seats fold down to allow for more space. There is a slight squeaking from my brakes I need to get checked out so I would suggest having them check for things like that prior to driving off the lot. But any issues I have had, especially compared to my lemon of a car I recently got rid of, have been miniscule and easily fixable.

You will be happy you got it!
No problems! I love this car! Great pick up and go! Engine stops while car is idling - it was weird at first but you get used to it! Sharp looking! Very very comfortable to drive around town or on road trips! Love the navigation, text reader and all of the hands free functionality!

Ford Ecosport Ses
No I wouldn't reccomend this vehicle. I have a 2019 Ford ecosport ses and the inside of the driver's door is cracked by the inside door hinge and Ford Canada won't cover it. Why have extended warranty if nothing is covered. I know for certain that once I get my ecosport paid off I will never deal with Ford again
accountCircle Michele K
Not worth the money at all.
The pick up is awful - just waiting at a red light or breaking a stop sign your car jumps and takes forever to pick back up again. It is also not very roomy - if you have a rear facing child do not bother getting this car because you'll be pressed against the steering wheel or your passenger will be against the glove box.

Ford ecosport, not as good as it seems.
The car is very small not that comfortable. It has many electrical problems and the performance is not as good as it should be. The car is very small not that comfortable. It has many electrical problems and the performance is not as good as it should be.

Sturdy, reliable little car! Worth the price.
It is a good car and drives nicely. Despite it being a ford which does not have the best reputation, it is a reliable car. I enjoy driving it and I use it a lot since I drive a lot for my work. I haven't had any problems with it since I got it in 2019. The only thing is that I think it is a little small on the inside though.
accountCircle Tabitha B
Fuel friendly vehicle that has neat features.
I drive the ford ecosport. It is a cute little car but is very small. It seats 4 people fairly comfortably, but not a lot of space to stretch out. The trunk is interesting and opens from the side rather than pop up. The vehicle is good on gas and fills up for less than $20. The car has a feature where it shuts off at a red light or stop sign to conserve gas. Good for someone young or single, not so much for a family.
accountCircle Brittany M
Great starter car for young adults.
The ford ecosport is a very nice starter car for someone in the market. It drives very smoothly and is very technology based and savvy. It is a bit small, but does the job well! Interior is sleek and comfortable. Monitor is equipped with Bluetooth, and USB hookup.

Great first SUV! Drives well in snow.
The inside is nice and has a big screen that has apple carplay which I love because I can just plug my phone right in and my phone screen appears on the car screen. I made the mistake of not asking them how to open the trunk, it is a tiny button that is tucked into the right backlight. I love the back windshield wiper it is been super handy. I do wish the car was a little faster but it could be worse. I wish the cup holders in the middle were a little bigger.
accountCircle Guillermo G
An interesting detail is that this is still considered an SUV.
The vehicle is too small for me. I prefer a bigger vehicle. I feel like I am a giant in a tiny vehicle. Car is great on gas and price is good. Only got it cause they had 3 months no payments and that was the cheapest vehicle still considered and SUV. The visor either covers too much for you to see in front and not enough on sides for sun.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford EcoSport?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Ford EcoSport is a nice alternative to compact sedans, but owner satisfaction scores drop as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the 2019 EcoSport at 4.1/5, enjoying the above-average cargo space for its size, but doesn’t like the jittery ride on rougher road surfaces.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the EcoSport a 4.1/5, praising the elevated driving position for its size, but owners don’t like the limited rear legroom.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Ford EcoSport Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Ford EcoSport include a loss of oil pressure, heavy brake pedal feel, along with some door latch issues. Overall, these problems are worse than a lot of other small SUVs on the market, leading to expensive repair costs as the EcoSport ages.

A loss of oil pressure is the most widespread and serious problem reported by 2019 EcoSport owners, showing up within the first 40,000 miles. The engine oil pump belt tensioner is known to fail, which will lead to a total loss in pressure, and destroy the engine. The only way to fix the problem is by replacing the entire engine assembly, which costs over $6,000 depending on local labor rates.

Heavy brake pedal feel is another complaint from some EcoSport owners at around 30,000 miles. The problem is usually caused by a worn-out brake booster, which makes the brakes harder to use. Replacing the brake booster is a fairly involved process, costing around $850.

Door latch issues have also been found on some 2019 EcoSport models within the first 2,000 miles. The latches simply get out of alignment with the door catches and have to be realigned. Re-aligning the door latches is fairly easy for a shop to do, costing under $100.

There is only one recall on the 2019 Ford EcoSport, which is better than some other small SUVs from the same year. The recall covers insufficient front seat frame welds. Ford will replace the front seat assemblies on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2019 Ford EcoSport Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Ford EcoSport may last around 120,000 miles before something becomes too expensive to repair, which is much shorter than other small SUVs like the Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than some competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $438 per year.

As a used 2019 EcoSport reaches 80,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the fuel pressure sensor for $170, mass airflow sensor costing $275, along with the A/C compressor which costs over $1,000.

So far it has been a very reliable vehicle for my family. We have taken it on a couple trips to Kentucky without a problem. I really enjoy it just wish it was a bit more roomy in the backseat it is very hard to get three people back there with two car seats.

accountCircle Austin B

The vehicle is really reliable so far. I have had it for 3 months and I haven't had any problems the car has plenty of power and is all around a great car.

accountCircle Ann L

I have only had the car for a month so it is too soon to speak about reliability. However, so far, so good.

accountCircle Jenny H

Very reliable and haven't had any problems it's a great car to own it's very roomy and has fold down back seats and Bluetooth it handled great when driving

accountCircle Steve O

The ecosport is very reliable. I have not had any issues with the car at all since leasing it. I do wish the gas mileage was better

accountCircle Jim B

So far I have only had one issue with it and that has been the passenger seatbelt. It won't retract properly.

How Is the Technology?

Standard entertainment technology is worse than some competitors, only offering a relatively small 4.2-inch central display screen. Optional upgrades include larger 6.5-inch or 8-inch touch screens with Sync3, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity.

Safety technology features found on all models are pretty basic, offering a rearview camera, along with MyKey.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Rear cross traffic alert

Is the 2019 Ford EcoSport a Good Value?

No, the 2019 Ford EcoSport is a bad value since it still suffers from the same engine problems from last year, making it more expensive to own. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $14,250 to $21,999, making it less than a Subaru Forester or Mazda CX-5. When new, the price range was $19,995 to $27,610. Depreciation is worse than some other SUVs, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Ford EcoSport?

What Engines Come In the Ford EcoSport?

  • 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine: This turbocharged engine generates 123 horsepower and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, getting up to 28 MPG. As for acceleration, the EcoSport equipped with this engine takes around 10.5 seconds to sprint from 0-60 MPH.
  • 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine: Producing 166 horsepower, this naturally aspirated engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission at up to 25 MPG. With this engine under the hood, the EcoSport can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in a slightly quicker time, roughly around 10 seconds.

What Colors Does the Ford EcoSport Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Ford EcoSport?

The 2019 Ford EcoSport, designed as a subcompact SUV, prioritizes both functionality and comfort for its occupants. With a raised driving position, drivers get a good view of the road, adding to driving comfort. Inside, the seats are designed to offer decent support, especially on short to medium-length journeys.

The cabin incorporates soft-touch materials in key areas, which enhances the overall feel and ambiance of the interior. The suspension is set up to absorb most road imperfections, providing a smooth ride in typical urban and highway settings. For rear passengers, legroom and headroom are satisfactory for a vehicle of its size. On the tech front, the available SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen is user-friendly and adds to the convenience and comfort of both the driver and passengers. However, like any vehicle, comfort can be subjective, and while many find the EcoSport cozy and adequate for daily commutes and trips, some might find it a tad compact compared to larger SUVs.

How Much Storage Space Does the Ford EcoSport Have?

The 2019 Ford EcoSport offers a versatile amount of storage space suitable for city driving and weekend adventures alike. In the rear, with the back seats in their upright position, the EcoSport provides about 20.9 cubic feet of cargo room. This is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate grocery bags, a stroller, or a couple of suitcases for a short trip.

If you need more space for bigger items or additional luggage, the back seats can be folded down to expand the cargo area to an impressive 50 cubic feet. With this expanded space, it’s possible to transport large items such as a bicycle, larger pieces of furniture, or even a set of golf clubs with ease. This flexibility in storage makes the 2019 Ford EcoSport a practical choice for those who need both a compact urban vehicle and a car with ample storage capacity.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Ford EcoSport was introduced in 2018 as a smaller SUV which sits below the Escape in Ford’s lineup.

2018: First model year for the Ford EcoSport, which has a new engine, styling, and technology.

2019: More standard features across all models.

2020: 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot is now standard on all models, new 8-inch touchscreen standard on SE models.

2021: Standard power driver’s seat on SES and Titanium models, small exterior styling changes.

2022: All-wheel drive is now standard on all models, base turbocharged engine removed.

How Does the Ford EcoSport Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Ford EcoSport is a bad small SUV since there are a lot of serious mechanical problems found on it, making it expensive to own, and one that buyers should stay away from.

The Ford Escape is another compact SUV offered by Ford, which costs about $2,500 more. Passenger and cargo space are both better in the Ford Escape, while the Ford EcoSport fits better in small parking areas found in large cities. We recommend the Ford Escape since it has better reliability ratings as it ages.

The Honda CR-V is a popular competitor which can be found for around $4,000 more. Standard technology is much better in the Honda CR-V, while the steering is more responsive in the Ford EcoSport. We recommend the Honda CR-V since it lasts much longer, and has lower ownership costs as it ages.

1.0 liter engine replacement
At 78,000 miles the wet belt had dissolved and put rubber pieces in the oil pump pickup. This led to low oil pressure that did not trigger the oil pressure sensor. Engine self destruction occurs every time it is running. The warranty company from the dealership fought my mechanic for a full engine replacement, even with tech bulitten stating it need full replacement. Avoid all Fords since they take no responsibility for poor design of their vehicles.

The ford ecosport is a great car, especially for small families. The reverse camera and the gas mileage are amazing. The camera is clear and precise. The gas mileage is desirable. I have had no problems with my ecosport. It is small and sporty and great on gas mileage. The only design issue is the cup holders in the counsels. The emergency brake is right next to them which hampers the size of the cup to put on it. Also sometimes when taking the cup out the lid comes off after hitting the emergency brake.

The ford ecosport is a good option for a new driver but not for longevity.
My vehicle has electric seats, heated seats, a sunroof, a big touch screen radio and a nice stereo system. Although it has these positive aspects the stability of the car is not that great. It feels as though a strong gust of wind could blow my car over. The ride of the car itself is very smooth, but the car does use up gas extremely quick.

Engine problems/getting up to speed.
I don't like that it doesn't get up to speed very fast or that it doesn't seem to get out of its own way. It's a nice little car for city driving but anything on a highway or freeway seems to be hard on this vehicle. Would be a better car if it had a larger engine, it wouldn't feel like you're beating on the car so much.

Built in navigation is great.
There is no problems it gets really great gas mileage. The car also has heated seats and a heated steering wheel. The car has Bluetooth radio which is great for hands free it also has navigation built in when the car is in sport mode it will get up and go.

My vehicle was great before kids now it is too small.
I hate how little trunk space there is now that we have a baby. It is reliable and comfortable in the front seat. The car seat pushes the passenger seat up pretty far so it is not very comfortable. It is drives well in the snow. I like the extra gadgets like the ambient lighting and roof rack that I have.

When driving my car the radio volume adjusts based off the outside noises.
My car has been completely fine through the year and a half I have had it, no accidents and have only had to bring into the shop for tire changes. I take my car everywhere I go have not broke down or needed a jumpstart. Couldn’t be more happy with my car.

Compact, elegant, aerodynamic design.
Very compact car. It is quite comfortable inside. Get many electronic gadgets. Includes back sensor and camera with a very big screen. Back side has good space. The audio input includes USB with external media control. As safety it also brings 4-wheel abs.

Zippy fun car to drive - eco-friendly, great accessories, sunroof.
It is a great size, gets great mileage, is partly electronic, got a great price, have great service from our local ford dealer. It has a sunroof which I love. It is very reliable - haven't had an issue yet. We purchased it during covid and the dealership was very responsible. I like that it came with roof racks for my kayaks and that the rear storage has a secrecy cover. I mean I haven't had the car that long to really talk that much about it. I always get the rubber floor mats (which were included in the sales price). It has great pick up and the dashboard is very user friendly. It came with Sirius which I am loving. We have owned the escape since 2016 and this is a cooler, smaller but not too small to be useful.

My vehicle. The way my seats gone up high enough for me to see without a pillow.
Do not have any problem. I love my car cause of the features it has. I also love my seats when you are cold you can heat them up in the front. For the first time I actually do not have to use a pillow. There's only one thing I miss from having in the car is a CD player.

Apple CarPlay is a great feature that this vehicle has at the se trim package.
Very economical and comfortable car. May feel kind of small to a larger person. Very nice all around vehicle. Has great gas mileage, I average 28.5 miles to the gallon after 15000 miles driven. Not full of power but not needed for what it is. I would recommend this car to anybody looking for a smaller vehicle.

Small SUV. Easy to drive and park.
It would s small and easy to drive. Parking is so easy. It has just the right amount of space for a small family or a single person. The only thing is I feel the drink holders up front could be bigger. Add some more space it just to compact for me. I love the navigation screen and you can text and talk with carplay.
accountCircle Guillermo G on February 20, 2021
An interesting detail is that this is still considered an SUV.
The vehicle is too small for me. I prefer a bigger vehicle. I feel like I am a giant in a tiny vehicle. Car is great on gas and price is good. Only got it cause they had 3 months no payments and that was the cheapest vehicle still considered and SUV. The visor either covers too much for you to see in front and not enough on sides for sun.

It is amazing, I have had zero problems with it.
Very reliable, plenty of room for 5 people to fit, I fit 3 car seats along the back seat comfortably. It is very safe and I enjoy it very much. 2 adult and 3 car seats, 5 adults, they all fit comfortably. The seat belts do not cut your neck, they are very comfortably and fit well. The driver seat moves to almost every height. I enjoy this vehicle.

Ford ecosport problems, performance,reliability.
I was a little apprehensive about buying this car after reading many expert reviews, a lot of them slating the car, but I took a test drive and loved it. I previously had a peugeot 2019 which I loved but decided after sporting an ecosport on the road that I wanted a change.

Great compact 4 wheel drive.
I love how comfortable the seats are. I love the heated seats I especially love that it doesn't have a trunk as I found it more readable and easier to load items in. I love the GPS. It handles real nice. The only drawback is the position of the cup holders. I find the steering wheel a little awkward for small space especially for a small person like myself.
accountCircle sherry B on January 31, 2021
It is really fast and has great handling.
No problems really at all, I have had some problems with my check engine light but it was just a fuse that was loose. I love my car and looking forward to get a newer one soon. I do not think I have had a car more reliable than this one. So I am happy with the car I got with minimum problems.

Awesome ford ecosport-size matters.
I love the size of my car. It is big enough for the family of four and comfortable for me to run errands with. We used to have a corolla and just love the way the ecosport drives and feels. I love the fact that you can turn on the car from the ford app before getting in the car. I highly. Recommend this vehicle!

Great value on a starter vehicle.
The ecosport gets great mileage, and the built-in navigation system is really helpful. The trunk space is limited, but the back seats can go down to allow for more room. The ecosport is a great starter vehicle, that has really good value for the price you pay.
accountCircle Christine L on January 30, 2021
A great car for someone looking for a small SUV.
I love my ecosport, the gas mileage is great and it handles really well in all weather. It is the right size for me and I like the small SUV body style. I think this is a great car and serves my needs really well. I have not had any problems with my car. The only thing I do not like is the fuel ecosystem when the car shuts off when stopped and the fact that you have to turn it off manually every time you get in the car, I wish you could just turn it off. But all in all I love this car and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a small SUV.

Echo sport makes driving fun!
My vehicle is very reliable and performs great. Has easy handling and a comfortable steering wheel. The driver's seat has enough functions to make you quite comfortable. The dash and information screen are easy to reach and it has a great sound system.
accountCircle Charlene B on January 18, 2021
This might be a small SUV but its luxurious.
I love the height of the ford ecosport. I have the compact of a car but the space and height of an SUV. It has an easy to use infotainment system, ample cargo space, agile handling and a swing gate instead of a lift gate. The only safety feature it does not have and I wish it did is a spare tire only a compressor to air up a tire but nothing to replace if blown out. Most people today have roadside assistance so this would be not big deal. An added feature I have that I enjoy is the sunroof. With this car I feel like it offers all the luxuries a full size SUV has but not as big of a price tag. If is energy efficient and it also gets really good gas mileage. I use unleaded gas but you have the option to use e85 which burns cleaner for the environment.

Has all kinds of technology.
I love the technology. It rides smooth. Has lots of passenger room. I haven't had any problems with the vehicle as far as maintenance. I use to have a Nissan juke, I think my Nissan had better gas mileage. I love the color (cooper) but I prefer if it didn't have a sunroof. I bought it used.

The community where I can take my family.
I find it quite comfortable and very familiar, I love it. The model of the vehicle is according to my style, it has incredible strength and capacity even though it is not a large truck, it has unmatched technology and makes me feel great and the color I chose makes it look spectacular.
