2020 Nissan Versa Review: Reasonably Dependable Small Car With Low Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Oct 30, 2023

The 2020 Nissan Versa lasts around 200,000 miles, with some average backup camera and A/C issues reported. At $13,800 to $17,900, it’s a great value for a small car to get you from point A to B, even if it’s not the fanciest choice on the market.

There are a lot of standard features for the price, it’s affordable to run and it’s very safe.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The base engine is weak, the touchscreen is less responsive than the competition and there’s not a lot of rear legroom.

Is the 2020 Nissan Versa a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2020 is a good year for the Nissan Versa since it’s an affordable choice loaded with a lot of safety tech. Owner reviews praise the stereo system, low running costs, along with the smooth suspension.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are still basic even after the redesign, the seats offer good support, cargo space is also excellent in the trunk.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no widespread complaints on the 2020 Versa. Avoid models from 20092016 since they have transmission issues, while 20172022 are better choices.
  • Performance 6/10 – Performance is poor from the relatively weak four-cylinder engine, although it’s built to be efficient rather than fast.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2020 Versa earns a 5-star rating in government crash tests. It comes standard with lane departure warning and a rearview camera. Optional upgrades include driver alertness monitoring along with adaptive cruise control.
  • Gas Mileage 9/10 – Fuel economy is great at up to 35 MPG, offering 378 miles of range out of the 10.8-gallon tank. Gas costs are $31 cheaper than average, at $190 per month.
  • Value 9/10 – The 2020 Nissan Versa is cheaper than nearly all other compact cars with slow depreciation rates, making it a great value for shoppers.

Great mpg, comfort, highest safety ratings, 10/10.
Great mpg, best safety, smooth ride, excellent performance, luxury options available, comfortable seats, side airbags, rear airbags, rollover airbags, 40 highway mpg, 35 city mpg, I get a full gas tank for $18 and get 340 miles per tank, awesome for road trips or traveling workers.

Small car, saves me gas money, and comfortable for long distance travel.
No problems so far. I just got my car. The only thing would be that does not have much power in the engine, but then again I do not race cars for a living, I really don't need it. The car is very basic. I do see savings on gas mileage and I love it. I got it for commuting to work and it is saving me money.

Spacious trunk. Five people fit. Easy to use small, convenient family car.
I love my Nissan versa. I love the smooth feeling when I drive it. I love how easy it is to use the radio and pair Bluetooth. Although my Bluetooth was paired right with the dealer. This vehicle does not use much gas and is filled with $20 to $30 of gas. The truck is spacious and if needed, one of the seats could be brought down for more. Five people at the most could fit in this car.

Great car to have! Only issue is the high prices and high price in gas.
It is perfect but the gas is somewhat expensive. If you had a type of issue with it, it definitely would cost a lot more than other vehicles. Other than that, it is a good car and a good model. Prices are high, on the entire car itself and gas. Overall a good car.

It is a great car I love it!
It is spacious and reliable. It is my first push to start car. It also has a touch screen, Bluetooth and also has 2 separate areas to charge phones at. I like that the ac gets really cold fast and that my car warms up fast. It also lets me know what tire needs air.

Bells and whistles of the 2020 Nissan versa.
Great on gas mileage. The color is burgundy and it has a backup camera in it. I've had it over two months. Its small enough for my teenage daughter to handle. It also has satellite radio in it and I love it. The 2020 has the armrest in whereas the older models does not.

My vehicle is a very nice vehicle for an in the go.
I love my car, its a sport mode so if I want to drive fast I can. It's a small car, but I can manage. The trunk space is huge as well. The interior of the car is very nice. The gas mileage is awesome. The car also has a big screen where I can Bluetooth my phone and play music or listen to the radio, and talk on the phone while I am driving.

Perfect little car for a comfortable smooth ride.
I absolutely love this car! Note that it is a very small car, which I think is a plus. Fully equipped with safety features such as automatic braking and a back up camera. If you switch lanes without your blinker the steering wheel vibrates which is actually a pretty useful reminder. Comfortable and smooth ride.

Sleek simple design gas wizard.
This vehicle is too cramped in front also too low to ground with a person who has back or neck problems. If you hit a bump or pothole believe me you can feel it jar u. The style is nice and it does get good gas mileage, interior material is comfortable, radio sometimes you can get a station on it. Air and heat in this vehicle is very good but it takes while to warm up. I also notice that when you have everything running it is noisy.

Great on gas. Nice beginner driver car.
It takes a while to accelerate. Other than that it is great on gas and it is comfortable for someone that is no taller than 5’7. Anybody else that is taller, would probably be uncomfortable. A nice starter car for a beginner driver. Maybe college student.

Small, needs more room...
Nothing really bad, just getting tired of driving a straight drive. Also pretty cheap to maintain. It is also a 2020, push to start, manual, 0w-20 oil, like I am telling you. Cheap to maintain. But anyways, I would recommend getting it if you are wanting to learn how to drive a straight drive and make it an everyday driver.

Overall great car for what it is worth.
I do not necessarily like the automatic safety features. I have to turn off the rear end collision safety feature because it is too sensitive. It once made me stop from driving over a flat grate in the road. I can recommend this car for its great gas mileage, however.

Roomier than it looks and can drive long distances.
It does not have much power and it makes a creaking sound. The seats are comfortable and it is roomier than it looks. It has Bluetooth, cruise control, and other modern features. I was disappointed that there is no good. The car is cute and had no problems moving it from Texas to Arizona recently.

I miss my older sentra. Already been having to take it to Nissan several times.
Some have issues with the keyless ignition, as well as getting false errors on the control system. Sometimes have issues with radio controls. Makes loud noise everyone in a while when I press on the brake, almost like a grinding noise. Which is odd because the brakes are brand new.

2020 Nissan versa pros and cons.
The car performance and comfort are pretty standard. The car has some road noise but drives smooth and the wheel sensors work very well. I do have to say one of the sensors is a little sensitive and forms off more the needed. Gas mileage on this car is amazing and have definitely saved money in that area. Sound system is clean and really not to bad for a stock set. Would have liked more digital functions but for the price I cannot complain. I originally went in for the Altima as it had a bigger body structure and more digital features but for the money I saved switching to this model I am happy with my purchase.

What Do Critics Say About the Nissan Versa?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Nissan Versa offers a lot of great features that make it a good value, with high owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the Nissan Versa at 4.4/5, enjoying the passenger space in the cabin, but doesn’t like the sluggish acceleration from the small engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Versa a 4/5, praising the advanced driver assistance features, but owners don’t like the poor braking performance with rear drum brakes.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Nissan Versa Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Nissan Versa include the backup camera not displaying an image, the A/C blowing weak, along with noise from the wheels. Overall, these problems are similar to other small cars from the same year, leading to average repair costs as it ages.

The backup camera not displaying an image is the most widespread complaint from 2020 Versa owners, showing up at around 1,500 miles. There are software updates available for the camera system which improve the reliability. Dealerships will install these updates for free on models with the issue.

The A/C blowing weak is another problem mentioned by some Versa owners at around 10,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a clogged or dirty cabin air filter, which costs around $45 to replace. There are also some reports of damage to the A/C fan system, which can cost $300 or more to swap out.

Noise from the wheels has also been reported on some Versa models at around 20,000 miles. The wheel bearings tend to wear out quickly and have to be replaced. Changing out the wheel bearings costs around $250, depending on local labor rates.

There are two recalls on the 2020 Nissan Versa, which is similar to other cars from the same year. The most serious recall covers the fuel tank, which may have insufficient welds and leak gas. Nissan will replace the fuel tank on affected models for free. The other recall covers turn signal bulbs, which dealers will also change out for free.

How Long Will the 2020 Nissan Versa Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Nissan Versa can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than some other small cars like the Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than some competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $446 per year.

As a used 2020 Versa reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the tie rods costing $175, ignition coil costing $300, along with the window regulator, which costs around $400.

Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 4% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Nissan Versa?

The 2020 Nissan Versa comes with a single engine option. It’s powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 122 horsepower. Paired with this engine, buyers have the choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Regarding performance, with the CVT, the Versa can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 9.7 seconds. Regarding fuel efficiency, the Versa, with the CVT, delivers a combined fuel economy of around 35 MPG.

What Colors Does the Nissan Versa Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Nissan Versa?

The 2020 Nissan Versa, despite being categorized as a subcompact sedan, made significant strides regarding comfort compared to its predecessors. The car features a redesigned interior that incorporates higher quality materials, leading to a more refined and pleasant ambiance inside the cabin. The seats, both in the front and rear, are designed to provide adequate support and cushioning, suitable for daily commuting or short trips.

Additionally, the Versa offers ample headroom and legroom for front passengers, although taller adults in the rear might want a bit more space. The ride quality is generally smooth, with the car effectively absorbing most road imperfections. However, on rougher terrains or highways, some road noise might filter into the cabin. Overall, for its segment and price point, the 2020 Nissan Versa delivers a commendable level of comfort for its occupants.

How Much Storage Space Does the Nissan Versa Have?

The 2020 Nissan Versa offers a surprisingly roomy trunk for a subcompact sedan, boasting about 14.7 cubic feet of cargo space. This capacity is large enough to accommodate a couple of medium-sized suitcases or several grocery bags, making it suitable for weekend trips or shopping sprees.

In addition to the trunk space, the Versa also offers several smaller storage solutions within its cabin. There are door pockets, cupholders, a center console bin, and a glove compartment, all designed to help drivers and passengers keep their belongings organized. These interior storage spaces are ideal for items like water bottles, wallets, mobile devices, and other everyday essentials.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Nissan Versa was introduced for the 2020 model year.

2015: Small exterior styling changes, standard Bluetooth on all models, and upgraded cabin materials.

2016: New four-speaker stereo system and body-colored powered mirrors added to all models.

2017: Upgraded interior panels found in the SV Special Edition package.

2018: SL model removed from the lineup, Base model only offered with a manual transmission.

2019: The SV Special Edition model has upgraded features from earlier years.

2020: Fully redesigned for the third generation with new technology, styling, engines, and more safety features.

2021: No major updates after the full redesign last year.

How Does the Nissan Versa Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Nissan Versa is a nice small car built for shoppers on a budget and is surprisingly well-equipped for a vehicle in its price range.

The Nissan Sentra is another small car from Nissan, which can be found for about $1,500 more. Passenger room is better in the Nissan Sentra, while the Nissan Versa fits better into the small parking spots found in large cities. We recommend the Nissan Versa since it’s more practical, although both are similar so it’s worth testing them out to see which you prefer.

The Hyundai Elantra is a popular compact car available for about $2,500 more. Interior materials are nicer in the Hyundai Elantra, while the Nissan Versa offers more responsive steering. We recommend the Hyundai Elantra since it’s a nicer car, although if you’re on a budget, the Versa is a good choice with similar reliability.

An efficient reliable little car.
One problem with my vehicle is that within the first 2 months of owning the car I have had to add air to the tires 3 times already. A positive that is probably my favorite thing about the vehicle is that it gets great gas mileage. It is a very small car which I like, it is easy to handle and make turns with. I really enjoy my car for the most part. It is very roomy. It has a very large trunk. It has a lot of room in the car itself as well. The safety features are nice, such as the assistance breaking. For example: if I am not paying attention and there’s a car in front of me I will automatically break. If there is a car too close behind me my car will start beeping as well. If I am swerving into the other lane my steering wheel will vibrate and will show up on my dashboard.

Some have issues with the keyless ignition, as well as getting false errors on the control system. Sometimes have issues with radio controls. Makes loud noise everyone in a while when I press on the brake, almost like a grinding noise. Which is odd because the brakes are brand new.

Nissan versa review of comfortability and features.
No problems and/ no issues with this vehicle. It is comfortable and reliable to go to and from work. Features are great. Especially the back up and bumper options. Upset that the back sit does not have a pull down cup holder. Overall I give this vehicle an a-.

It is a great car. It is great on gas.
It is a really great car. It is very comfortable to ride in. It is very up to date with the newest technology. It is very reliable and great on gas. I can go to south ga from north ga on a full tank of gas and have to stop and get gas when I get to south ga.

First time ever the Versas look very nice and upgraded compared to the 2019.
I love my car. It is great on gas and sport mode is really cool too. The look of the car it is self reminds me of the Altima. This is the first time the Versas looks decent. The radio is loud enough to blast the music for a vining night. The features are very nice. It is a affordable car so it does have its quirks, otherwise is amazing.

Safety features make it worth it.
I have not experienced any problems with my new vehicle. It performs and is way more reliable than my old Altima. The safety features are amazing and makes me feel a lot more comfortable driving on interstates. It vibrates when I go to for on a line, reminds me to use my blinker, and the back up camera is very useful. It also tells me when there is a car next to me.

My car is great on gas. It is very reliable. I love my car.
My car is my favorite color which is blue. It is my first car. I bought it completely. I do not have any payments. My car is currently unable to be driven. When my bf was on his way to work he got hit by someone. The person who hit him was in a bigger truck. The fender is dented. The hood is bent. The light is completely busted. The bumper is cracked.

Handling and control in the rain is far superior to others!
Nissan did an excellent job making a quality vehicle for a great price. It comes loaded with safety features and quality-of-life features. The display for CarPlay works flawlessly. All of the materials are good quality. The car feels small when you are coming from something bigger, but you get used to it. I just took an 8 hour road trip and felt comfort the whole time. My back usually starts hurting about 4 hours into and trip but I felt great the entire time. I would like a few more cubbies to hold my stuff but that is about my only complaint. I got the versa after having a 2015 Honda civic. The Nissan has far superior control and handling - especially in the rain. Highly recommend!

Has safety features all around the vehicle, great mileage and cheap gas.
No problems in this vehicle. Reliable and great on gas as well has alot of safety features I didn't expect in a base model version. And drives very smooth. And also can get great mileage in the vehicle. Definitely worth the purchase for a base model car.

I love this car and I am so glad I chose this make and model to buy.
I haven't really had any issues. I love how comfortable the seats are and how well I'drives. It has features to help you stay in the lanes and vibrates when you are too far over. It has collision protection to help you avoid crashing and will notify you if you are too close to a car.

Best decision in a long time!
I love my versa! It is sporty, quiet, and zippy! I love the features such as seat warmers and the car play! I love the color combination to! The trunk space is very spacious for a small car. It parks easily and gets me around town in a snap! The versa is my best decision of a new car in a long time!

Nissan versa - incredible comfort and reliability in a compact sedan!!
My Nissan versa has been great so far! I only bought it a few months ago, but it receives great gas mileage and rides smoothly. I haven't had any issues thus-far with it, and it has been reliable. I drive it about 2 1/2 hours a day without any issues. While it looks compact, it feels spacious on the inside.
