The 2016 Kia Sorento’s impressive powertrain options are overshadowed by severe safety and mechanical problems. Kia’s engine lineup is notorious for burning excessive oil. A sudden drop in the oil level without any warning lights illuminating has left many owners no choice but to swap the engine.

Key Points

  • The 2016 Kia Sorento has six recalls, one investigation, and over 490 complaints registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • The most important recall is about a fuel leakage problem in over 71,000 Kia vehicles.
  • Many 2016 Sorento owners have complained about excessive oil consumption ruining the engine.
  • Another common com plaint cited by 2016 Kia Sorento owners is over a malfunctioning acceleration pedal.
  • Paint peeling off from different panels of the vehicle has made owners spend as much as $1,000 to resolve the issue.

Kia Recalled 2016 Sorento Six Times Over Problems With Improper Acceleration and Fuel Leaks

The 2016 Kia Sorento comes in five trims and offers three different engines. Although the SUV’s variety of options makes it attractive, its shortcomings drag the midsize SUV behind its competitors. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2016 Kia Sorento was recalled six times over some serious safety issues

The first recall concerns a problem with the SUV’s acceleration. With the recall, Kia acknowledged that an improperly soldered component in the accelerator pedal does not allow the driver to accelerate the vehicle correctly.

Kia recalled the 2016 Sorento for a flawed front passenger seat belt that couldn’t be latched. About a year later, Kia opened another recall covering to fix an improper weld that could break and affect the rear suspension alignment.

Kia also recalled certain 2016 Sorentos that previously received an engine replacement under a previous recall. A high-pressure fuel pipe may have been damaged during the replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak.

2016 Sorento Owners’ Top Complaint is About Excessive Oil Consumption Leading to Engine Failure

About half of the nearly 500 owner complaints registered with the NHTSA are about the engine, including experiences with loud knocking sounds coming from under the hood followed by a loss of power, leaving owners to have to replace the entire engine.

However, the most common cause of engine failure in the 2016 Kia Sorento is excessive oil consumption. According to Car Complaints, owners have spent $6,330 on average to swap the powertrain.

According to several reports, owners have noticed the oil level dropping significantly not long after an oil change. “We change it every 6,000 miles, and within less than 2,000 miles, it is over a quart low. It does not smoke or leak anywhere with 96,000 miles on the car,” posted one 2016 Sorento owner on Kia Forums.

High oil consumption is a widespread issue in Kia’s GDI engines and comes from carbon deposits accumulating in the intake valves.

problems With Rough Shifts and Improper Acceleration Have Been Reported By 2016 Kia Sorento Owners

The 2016 Kia Sorento also has a common transmission problem resulting in rough shifting when the engine is cold. One Car Complaints user reports, “The transmission shifts very hard between first and second [gear] when the engine is cold. Once warmed up, there’s no problem. Have been to the dealer six times and tech can find no problems.”

Despite Kia’s attempt to solve acceleration issues through a recall, some owners continue to deal with a faulty acceleration pedal.

“My vehicle is exhibiting symptoms of a defective gas pedal as described in Kia’s recall for the 2016 Kia Sorento,” says one owner in a complaint registered to the NHTSA. “However, my vehicle is not part of the recall group. I took my car to the dealer to request this recall be done on my vehicle, but they would not make an exception.”

2016 Sorento SUVs Have Reportedly Experienced Paint Peeling Off and Exterior Lights Malfunctioning

There is approximately four dozen complaints registered with the NHTSA about the 2016 Sorento’s paint peeling off. The problem is due to the manufacturer failing to prime-coat some panels. Even owners who have kept their Sorento in great condition and stored it in a garage have mentioned dealing with this issue.

Since it’s not a safety issue, Kia has not recalled the SUV to provide a remedy for the paint job problem. Besides damaging the car’s looks, paint peeling off can lead to corrosion too. Some owners report having spent as much as $1,000 to fix the issue.

Another frequently cited problem with the 2016 Sorento pertains to malfunctioning headlights. Most of the owner complaints mention the headlights turning off randomly for a few seconds when they are on “Auto” mode. Some other owners have  mentioned the headlights burning out.

Due to Widespread Safety Issues, the 2016 Kia Sorento Falls Short of Other Popular Midsize SUVs

The 2016 Kia Sorento’s reputation as a reliable family hauler is plagued by widespread issues like excessive oil consumption and improper acceleration. According to real owner reviews on Vehicle History, the 2016 Sorento ranks near the bottom of the list among 17 other midsize SUVs.

Based on Kelley Blue Book prices, a used 2016 Kia Sorento goes for around $18,687 to $26,151. Within the same price range, a used 2016 Mazda CX-9 can offer better reliability and a more stylish exterior design. Where the Sorento stands out is fuel consumption, with up to 29 mpg on the highway.

Issues Kia knew about led to engine failure
I have a 2016 Kia Sorento EX AWD V6. It has been regularly serviced and had only had regular wear and tear issues and I never had oil consumption issues. The car was excellent before the failure noted here, and I would have given it five stars, absent the failure detailed in this review and the causes of it. I had driven the car on the highway for about 2 hours and had exited and was driving on city streets when suddenly I smelled coolant. Then, steam came through the vents and the car started running hot. I stopped driving thinking it was just a radiator hose. I had the car towed to a service shop and they told me the engine was completely shot. Coolant had mixed with the oil, the oil had metal shavings, my engine block heads were warped, and the head gasket was blown. They said I needed a new engine and new cooling system. The total repairs were over $15,000! I am not paying for this and am challenging Kia to take care of this latent issue. I am also looking at joining some of the class actions around engine failures, which are sure to come. I did some research and noted that other owners had a similar issue that was caused by the engine mount screws stripping out and the screws only failed because they were fine threads instead of coarse threads. These issues are something Kia knows about and it should have proactively sought to fix these issues by recall before customers suffered catastrophic failures. Thankfully, I was not on the highway when this happened. I just want them to make this right by replacing the engine and using the proper screws to remount the engine. Then, I will sell this and run far away. Like another reviewer noted, I thought Kias and Hyundais had improved their build quality, but boy was I wrong!

Way too many issues
I bought my 2016 Kia Sorento in May of 2019 with less than 36000 miles and still with manufacturers warranty. I noticed after my oil change that the vehicle was consuming alot of oil. I spoke to the service department and they suggested anvil consumption test. Thy didn't tell me that I would have to pay for all of their diagnostic testing. When they identified what they thought was the possible cause- because it was consuming more oil than Kia recommended, it was going to cost me over 1200 dollars because they had to take the engine apart. I was told at that point that the warranty on the engine was extended to 100000 miles. At 52000 miles I was told I needed a new engine. My extended warranty would not cover this without a definitive on the reason for the excessive oil consumption. Now at 82000 miles again I am told I need a new engine but this time because a spark plug broke off and bounced around in the engine causing damage. Again my warranties do not cover this and they want me to pay 7500 for a brand new engine. I get my vehicle serviced as required and this is the thanks I get. I have a inquiry in with corporate and will proceed from there. This is not right to have paid all this money for the vehicle and warranties to only have to come out of pocket with even more money. I don't have a money tree in my back yard.

Worst vehicle I’ve ever purchased
I bought my 2016 Kia Sorento used in 2018 it had 52000 miles on it . It ran fine until 75000 miles. The oil consumption was terrible. Finally the Kia dealership replaced my motor under a recall at 88000 miles. That’s when I found out my motor was already replaced once before I bought it. I was then told I had a lifetime warranty on the motor. At 13500 milesmy oil consumption was getting worse. I made multiple calls to the Kia dealership and they stated that wasn’t covered under the warranty. The only thing that was covered is if the motor blows up. So I said you’re basically telling me to blow the motor up and you’ll replace. They said yes. So on01/25/23 I had my oil changed. On March 6,23 my car ran hot because it was out of oil. This caused my head gasket to blow. I called Kia and told them what happened. I told them what happened and the said it had nothing to do with the oil it was because my fan was failing. This meant warranty could not be used. After going in circles trying to get answers about getting it fixed I was told it would cost $5-6k. I told the forget it my car has 156000 miles and is on the 3rd motor. I’ve had several different vehicles this is the worst ever vehicle and dealership I’ve ever dealt with. I hate family Kia. I don’t even believe Kia or the dealership deserve 1 star

2016 KIA Sorento engine failure
I had purchased the car with 86,000 miles on it and had for a little over a year and the engine seized while I was going 80 down the interstate. No warning lights came on until I was able to coast the vehicle onto the side of the road and put in in park then the engine light, oil light and battery light came on. I contacted the Kia dealership and the engine was under recall I went weeks without a vehicle and when it was done I was turning out of the dealership because of a loud clicking noise I had to turn around and go back. Now the dealership is saying that its my fault because they could not test drive the vehicle before it came in with repairs Well no kidding the engine was seized!!! They are still refusing to own up to their mistakes and fix the vehicle saying that further costs are going to be out of pocket. HORRIBLE COMPANY!!!!! Stay far away from KIa and all of their vehicles they just put out shitty products and expect consumers to deal with their poor customer service and lack to do the right thing by their costumers. I cant wait to get rid of this car!!!!!!

2016 Sorentobout with 20k miles certified new love it. Until at 59k turbo was bad but dealership said was transmission. Thank goodness still had warranty so they replaced trans. After 1 month pick it up less than a mile away car loses power. It WAS the turbo! So after 2 more months. I get the car back. 7 full days later the engine blew at 60,020. Fast foward three months i finally get it back. I deceide to keep it with all the new parts. Thought it was the best to do. Now 35,000 miles with all the new parts and my turbo has broken again!! NO warning lights nothing! I laso have a back tail light that blows every 3 months. Dealership says thats my electric harness. I had a 2011 no problems 99k should of kept that. It sucks , I like the look and space of my car and overall comfortable. But d**n its one headache after another and tired of dealing with my local dealerships...

Horrible car, horrible company, horrible warranties!
Absolutely the worst car and company ever! My 2016 was bought as a certified preowned with 23k miles in 2018. I went ahead and purchased extended warranties as well. I had long commutes and also take road trips every summer and wanted reliability and comfort that I thought KIA offered. Right away I noticed that it seemed to burn oil, and mentioned it every time I went to have my oil changed. Each time I got the blow off of “that is normal for KIA engines”. Fast forward to 2019 at 98k, the kids and I were headed to Texas from Washington State as we had decided to move. During the trip I had my car serviced for the normal pre road trip checks, I made it three hours and my engine blew.

Worst car buying experience ever!
I recently pulled out a 2016 Kia Sorento SXL that I just got used from a dealership only just on January 5th that also has similar problems that happened February 26th. I was on my commute home on the interstate and traveling at 55mph when all of a sudden my vehicle lost power and acceleration slowed to 40 and slowing. Luckily we were near our exit. The check engine light alluminated and had to try and exit as quickly as possible to make it to a safe place on the shoulder of the exit at which point my vehicle shoots from normal temp to hot and starts smoking and shooting out antifreeze from under the hood and on to the windsheild on the passenger side.

Kia dealership said there was sludge in engine
I had my 2016 for about a year and a half I got it at like 40,000 or 50,000 and probably about a month after purchasing from the the Kia dealership it started making a noise and there was a jerk. Had warranty on it and everything. Got oil changes when it was needed. The oil change light never came on. My husband got oil change and next day it started making a knocking noise and started going slow. Now dealership says there is sludge in the engine and warranty people said they cannot repair it because we did our oil ourselves so they are basically saying that we neglected getting the oil changed. So now we had to get a new vehicle.

2016 kia sorrento
Yup, I got burned too. I’m just finding out about this piece of s**t car. After I hit 100k miles I noticed the oil loss. I have to add almost a full 5qts between oil changes. Hopefully if I’m lucky that’s all I’ll have to deal with until I get another car. After reading other peoples review’s it’s clear not to even bother to get Kia to do something about it. You’re wasting your time. Hyundais and Kias were always c**p cars to me when I was younger. I thought that changed over the years. Apparently not. They’re still the same pieces of s**t they’ve always been. BUYER BEWARE!!!

2016 Kia Sorrento, at 57799 miles and only had the car for 5 years, The engine has locked there was no oil on the stick no warning light came on no sound no nothing I was driving and it just cut off thought I need a new battery but I need a new starter found out the engine was like because it’s not oil on the stick don’t know what happened to the oil. I am so disappointed with Kia. I change my oil faithfully. II am waiting now to see if Kia approved for the new engine in my car. The car broke down August 25, 2022. Jerking and Oil consumption in the Engine
I have two issues with my 2016 Kia Sorento. 1) I keep feeling a jerk when I first drive it in the morning. I’ve taken it to the dealership several times, but they could not “replicate” the issue. Fast forward, after 100k warranty expires, Kia all of the sudden found the issue….my transmission (they think). 2) Oil consumption in my motor. No warning light. Just really heavy knocking sounds. This is a known issue. Do NOT buy a Kia.

Kia's warranty worthless
I would no recommend a 2016 Kia Sorrento or any Kia's as the warranty is bogus. We bought our Kia second hand 7\2019, it only has 28,000 miles which we put on less than 2,000. On 2/18/2021 the oil light came on. I called Kia to get a diagnostic but their network gad been out of use for over a week and they couldn't look uo our car so we had to wait. I called customer assistance and got a case file going for when their system came up.

Bought my 2016 Kia Sorento on 10/22/2022…engine blew on the freeway without ANY warning on 10/13/2022. I had the car less the 24 hours. Dealership putting in new engine but now I’m nervous & don’t know if I want the car especially after reading all the other reviews. Also having problems with the gas peddle feeling “stiff” & have to push pretty hard to accelerate. Think I might get a refund and look for a different car

I took it in with no light and now I have a check engine light. It’s just been a nightmare dealing with the dealership over this issue

Oil consumption
We are experiencing some problems with the engine due to the oil consumption issue. We recently had it towed and we were told that we need to be thinking about if we want to invest a few thousand + for an engine or think about getting another vehicle. Our Sorento has approximately 94,000 miles. If possible, we don't have any plans to purchase anymore Kia's.

Catastrophic Engine Failure at 64,700 Miles
A few days ago, I heard a loud pop as I was backing out of my driveway. Immediately I noticed a lot of white exhaust and the check engine light came on. We had the car towed to the dealer and they diagnosed it with "catastrophic engine failure." Unfortunately, I am the second owner, so the power train warranty expired at 60k instead of 100k miles.

Car sucks
I bought this car at 25k miles it was good until 100k miles and then blew the transmission then around 140k the engine failed the head bolt pulled the threads out of the engine block so it put coolant in the oil. All I can say if I wasn't a mechanic there is no way i could fix this car

Not worth the cost and the hassle!
There's been so many recalls with Kia vehicles and yet they do so little to actually value your customers getting their vehicle's worth. With all their vehicle malfunctioning issues their prices should not be so high. I cannot even trade it in without being in debt to the car still.
