Jeep Cherokee Best and Worst Years Include 2018 and 2020’s Strong Reliability Ratings, and 2014 and 2015’s Serious Powertrain Problems

Back by popular demand, the fifth-generation Jeep Cherokee returned for 2014. Unfortunately, the compact SUV stumbled out of the gate with costly powertrain problems, making earlier years some of the worst.

Key Points

  • Jeep brought the compact Cherokee SUV back for 2014. Owner reviews on Vehicle History give the model anywhere from 4.2 to 5.0/5.0 stars.
  • Cherokees from 2014 and 2015 are the vehicle’s worst years. These have many recalls and complaints, most regarding critical powertrain components.
  • The best years for the Jeep Cherokee include those from 2018 and 2020. These have fewer problems and have the highest owner ratings.
  • Be wary of Cherokees from 2016 and 2017, as well as post-refresh models from 2019 over a few hiccups concerning a new engine option.
  • The Cherokee is not as reliable as many rival offerings. But, the model’s best years should make for a dependable SUV that will last for years to come.

Owners Give the Jeep Cherokee Anywhere from 4.2 to 5.0/5.0 Stars on Vehicle History, with Later Years Being the Best of the Bunch

After a 13-year hiatus, Jeep brought the compact Cherokee SUV back for 2014, slotted between the smaller Compass/Patriot and the full-size Grand Cherokee. The model did enjoy a mid-cycle refresh in 2019, but much of the vehicle has remained unchanged since returning to the market.

In general, the fifth-generation Cherokee has been well received. Vehicle History owner reviews show the 2014 model has the lowest rating, at 4.2-stars, while the 2021 Cherokee holds a perfect score of 5.0.

Choose one of the best years of the Jeep Cherokee, and you’ll have yourself a dependable SUV capable of lasting 150,000 miles or more. Yet, land on one of the worst years, and you may spend more time driving a loaner than you do your Jeep.

What are the Worst Years for the Jeep Cherokee? Models from 2014 and 2015 May Need a New Transmission Before 100,000 Miles, Costing $3,500 on Average

Looking at reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Jeep Cherokee has 12 recalls issued, two investigations (one still open), and over 2,100 complaints registered. In comparison, those from 2015 have 10 recalls, three investigations, and around 1,400 complaints.

By the 2018 Cherokee, complaints dropped to less than 400, and by 2020, not even 50.

For 2014 and 2015 Cherokees, most complaints fall into critical categories like powertrain and engine. Automotive research site Car Complaints shows many owners mentioning transmission failure between 20,000 and 75,000 miles. Most share the same symptoms: rough shifting, engine stall, the parking brake indicator lighting up, and the unit failing.

The fix involves replacing the entire unit for an average cost of around $3,500. Considering the high number of reports, and that a 2014 Cherokee’s Blue Book value starts at only $10,000, you’re likely better off avoiding models from 2014 and 2015.

The silver lining is that several transmission-related recalls were issued on earlier models that may fix some problems, which we’ve covered in detail previously.

What are the Best Years for the Jeep Cherokee? Vehicle History Owner Reviews and NHTSA Reports Show Models from 2018 and 2020 Have Fewer Problems, Better Reliability Ratings

Unfortunately for the Jeep Cherokee, almost every year has an above-average number of recalls up until the 2020 model. However, Jeep handles recalls free of charge, so even if one year has a higher count, it’s not necessarily a model to avoid.

With the above in mind, the 2018 Jeep Cherokee is surely one of the SUV’s best years, even with six recalls. Registered complaints to the NHTSA sit at just 389, most about the engine stalling or burning oil excessively. While there are reports of the transmission shifting roughly or leaking fluid, mentions of outright failure are scarce.

Jeep gave the Cherokee a mid-cycle makeover for 2019, including adding a third engine option. While engine-related complaints spiked, few actually mention any of the three motors failing. Ultimately, the 2019 Cherokee isn’t one of the best years, but it also isn’t one of the worst.

The best year for the Jeep Cherokee is the 2020 model, which has just two recalls and 37 complaints. Considering the 2019 Cherokee has nine recalls and over 600 complaints, the 2020 model looks to be the winner.

Looking at owner rankings on Vehicle History, the 2018 model holds 4.5 stars out of five across more than 500 reviews. Even better, the 2020 Jeep Cherokee sports a 4.6-star rating from over 200 owners.

Jeeps Cherokee SUV has More Issues than Most Rivals, but Opting for a Best Year Over a Worst Should Yield a Good Experience

The Jeep Cherokee struggled in its early years, racking up more recalls and complaints than most competing models. While the 2014 Cherokee has 12 recalls and over 2,100 complaints, same-year rivals like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V have just three recalls and 620 complaints combined.

Your best bet, avoid earlier models from 2014 and 2015 and be cautious of those from 2016, 2017, and 2019. For the best experience, stick with the final year before the facelift, 2018, or the second year after, 2020. Regardless of the year, be sure to check the VIN to ensure all recalls have been performed.

2019 Cherokee Ltd purchased June 2018
I took possession of my 2019 Cherokee Ltd in June of 2018. Initially had some shifting issues with hesitation when quick stopping then accelerating. The car went in to Jeep several times for testing and eventually they mostly solved it with a mapping upgrade. Other than that the car has performed flawlessly for over five and a half years and over 70k miles. I recently read that Jeep is discontinuing the Cherokee with 2023 being the last model year. I'm very disappointed with that because the Cherokee is the best car I've owned over the last 30 years which included several Lexus, Volvo, Mercedes, Mini and Lincoln. And there is no reason to offload my 2019 just to get the 2023, my Jeep is in mint condition. I'm particularly impressed that at 71k miles I have not yet needed to replace the brake pads or rotors...and I have a heavy foot! This Jeep rides like a luxury sedan, extremely smooth and quiet. The seats are the most comfortable and form fitting(for me) of any of my prior vehicles. Cargo room has been sufficient with rarely a time I wished I had more. I drove this car the first year in metro NY and the historic blizzard of early 2019 made me a believer in Jeep. With stock all seasons and the car set to snow mode it was a beast! It shredded through deep snow while other 4x4's and AWD cars were bogged down. We then moved to Las Vegas and I upgraded to Vredestein Quadtrac Pro's, the Jeep has been great on hot highways, ice and snow at Mt Charleston in the winter and desert rocky trails. And they are even smoother and quieter than the OEM goodyears. Can't recommend the Vredesteins enough. My only complaint on this 2019 is that the EPA 19/27 mpg rating is total BS. With the 3.2L six engine I have been getting constantly 19/20 mpg for 90/10 highway/city driving using 87-89 octane gas. The best I have ever gotten was 22mpg on a 400 mile non stop drive. And most annoying is that the red panic button on the fob is too sensitive and is easily depressed when the fob is in my pocket setting off the loud alarm at the most inopportune times. I dont know what I'll do when I'm ready to get a new vehicle. I have been leasing 3yr/36k mile vehicles for 30 years and I was going to lease a new Jeep in 2022 but the dealers were price gauging terribly so I bought it out. I don't mind running it to 100k but if Jeep does not offer a replacement I might have to Leave Jeep because the Grand Cherokee is a truck and rides like a truck.

Spot on!
I have owned many Jeeps during the last two decades. Two years ago, we purchased the Jeep Cherokee Overland (2018) with the 3.2 V6. This has been an excellent vehicle. Great in the winter snow or wet payment, very little problems to date with just over 60,000. We have replaced tires, brakes, and the battery. That is all, no engine, electronic, or transmission issues so far (knock on wood). We average around 25-26 mpg combined and 28-30 for highway driving. I do not like the stop and go feature. Feel it led to replacing the battery sooner than it should have. I do change the oil every 3-5K with full synthetic oil and plan to do a flush and fill on the transmission at 75,000. I owned 3 Jeep Grand Cherokees, 2009, 2012, and 2014. Every one of them had transmission or differential issues. I am very pleased with our Cherokee and will keep it for a very long time.

Jeep Liberty--2004
I bought a 2004 Jeep Liberty in 2005. I am 70 years old. Best vehicle I ever owned. BUT the jeep was really squirley in wet weather. So my husband reshearched the problem and put wide tires on it and that solved the problem. It died on me this week. Will take more to fix it than it is worth. It has 150,000 miles on it. Sure pray I can get another vehicle as good as that one. Haven't had a car payment for 14 years. But, I just don't know that I can trust the new Cherokee. Don't know which way I will go. The rating above has nothing to do with me and I don't know anything about the 2014 Jeep. But was required to put in a rating (stupid}

2019 Jeep Cherokee TrailHawk Elite
Purchased used in 2022 with 95, 000 kms . Excellent vehicle! Performed magnificently off road , and on the street for everday driving until...August 2023. Drinving along well all of a sudden dash board warning, no power steering, then no brakes, a mist coming from air vent . Pulled over immediately, more smoke from air vent, baled out as fire erupted from engine area. Fire truck eventually arrived but vehicle totally engulfed....a total loss!! It was never determined what caused the fire!!

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee Was A Mistake Because Of Multiple Problems
I purchased this 2015 Jeep in 2014. Biggest mistake ever! I have a pile of service orders from transmission jerking ( never fixed) water pump screaming that could not be found until I videotaped it, paint peeling, several other small complaints and now a massive water leak into my rear hatch compartment. After having it in the service department twice I’m told the WELD that holds my hatch together is cracking and letting the water in!

2014 Jeep Cherokee: Constant Repairs
The issues with the car are overwhelming. The navigation system is incorrect, regardless of updates. The car has numerous recalls, and despite those being fixed, I have to continually take it to the shop as the check engine light comes on for no apparent reason. I have had to replace the gas cap twice already, the windshield wipers broke within a few months, and the a/c has simply stopped working several times

201,000+ miles and still going strong
I do take care of my 2015 Jeep Cherokee v6. Synthetic oil only, Trans flush and I've had very few problems. The biggest problem I had is when my battery went dead. The "intelligent sensor" or whatever they call it on the battery is dumb. Replace it, period. I do drive mostly highway miles but she drives like 60k miles. Looking forward to putting many more on and seeing how far she will go!

Major Transmission Problems With My 2015 Jeep Cherokee Along With Blind Spots
Way too many blind spots. Changing lanes, especially at night, is dangerous. The transmission will shift hard sometimes. It feels like that transmission is being handed out of the motor. The transmission does not gear down in a timely manner. When you come to a stop you have to wait for the transmission to completely gear down before you can take back off.

All I Do With My 2014 Jeep Cherokee Is Repair It
My jeep Cherokee 2014 is the most unreliable car I have owned in over 22 years. It has had so many issues the service department people know my voice when I call. I have taken my jeep Cherokee in for service in the 4 1/2 years since I bought it brand new more than both of my 11-year-old cars combined.

Too Many Problems With The 2014 Jeep Cherokee
The vehicle engine light comes on daily. I've had it for a year with 26000 miles on and I had to bring it to the dealer shop more than 8 times. All transmission-related problems. Unfortunately, the car is not reliable. It jerks a lot when switching gears and makes noise when turning off like a robot.

I Regret My Purchase Of The 2015 Jeep Cherokee
Transmission is horrible and there are updates needed all the time, in very cold weather I was not able to start the jeep so not very reliable, although I have 160k+ miles it has given me quite a few problems. It overheats too so I have to carry around coolant fluid.

Super reliable, can get through the snow with no problems easy to drive, and can fit a lot of things inside the back of the jeep. The features within the jeep are great, had the auto start and turn off to save the transmission when you're at a light or stop sign.
