Toyota RAV4 Problems Involve Fuel Pump Failure, Unintended Acceleration, and Suspension Corrosion

Despite being one of the best-selling vehicles in its segment, Toyota’s RAV4 has some notable common problems. Fuel tank issues with the 2019 RAV4 and sticky accelerators in 2010 are among the worst issues, which triggered recalls by Toyota.

Key Points

  • The 2010 RAV4 was part of two massive safety recalls issued by Toyota related to unintended acceleration caused by stuck gas pedals.
  • The 2010 and 2011 RAV4 model years had problems with rear suspension arm corrosion, causing noises and tire misalignment issues for owners.
  • 2010 through 2012 RAV4s were recalled for problems with seat belts being cut by the seat frame.
  • The redesigned 2019 RAV4 ended up having a lot of problems, with over 400 complaints and seven recalls reported by owners, mostly involving problems with the fuel pump and fuel tank.
  • The 2020 Toyota RAV4 had fewer complaints but was recalled for similar issues to the 2019 RAV4.
  • Since 2019, at least 20% of RAV4 sales are for hybrid models, and so far, the hybrids have had minimal problems and recalls. But owners have reported the most issues with the 2017 model year.

Third-generation Toyota RAV4 (2006-2012) Had More Problems in Later Model Years, Including an Issue With Unintended Acceleration

Toyota’s best-selling RAV4 has overall maintained a good reliability history, on top of being notoriously efficient and affordable. Unfortunately, the third-generation RAV4 (20062012) was among the worst in terms of problems, with over 30 recalls issued by Toyota between 2010-2012.

Of the 2010 RAV4’s nearly 400 complaints reported by owners to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), roughly a quarter of them involve issues with unintended acceleration. Toyota recalled the 2010 RAV4 twice for this issue.

Toyota initially recalled the 2010 RAV4 over a sticky accelerator pedal that could get stuck in a depressed position, creating safety risks. Toyota’s remedy was to install a reinforcement bar in the pedal.

The second recall, released in 2011, involves an issue with the RAV4’s floor mats. Unsecured or incompatible driver’s floor mats may cause the accelerator pedal to be stuck in a wide-open position, increasing the risk of a crash. Toyota offers free repair or replacement of the accelerator and floor mats.

Rear Suspension Components Tend to Corrode on Some 2010 and 2011 RAV4 Models

Both the 2010 and 2011 Toyota RAV4 model years were impacted by other significant issues that triggered recalls by the automaker. Of them, corrosion of the rear suspension arm (tie rod) affected nearly one million vehicles.

Owners reported numerous complaints to the NHTSA about noises being heard from the chassis of their RAV4s under certain conditions, and issues with alignment of the rear tires. As a result, Toyota issued safety recalls for RAV4s related to tie rod failure.

Caused by improper tightening of alignment adjustment nuts during service, the rear suspension arm (tie rod) may develop unwanted movement and rust that could cause damage and misalignment of the rear wheels. Toyota says it will inspect RAV4 tie rods and replace any that have rust.

2019 and 2020 RAV4s are Problematic, With Issues Ranging from Faulty Fuel Pumps to Engine Stalls

Introduced in 2019, the fifth-generation Toyota RAV4 was a leap forward in terms of design and technology. Unfortunately, this generation quickly became problematic for Toyota, being plagued by fuel pump issues, plummeting reliability ratings.

Drivers began reporting issues with their 2019 RAV4s stalling. With over half of complaints reported to the NHTSA about the 2019 RAV4 alone related to fuel issues, this problem was found to be widespread and rolled into the 2020 model year. As a result, Toyota recalled over 1.5 million vehicles, including the 2019 and 2020 RAV4s.

Toyota says that a defective low-pressure fuel pump found in certain RAV4s may fail, causing the engine to stall while driving. Toyota will have dealers replace the fuel pump assembly.

Owners Report Electrical Issues and Brake Problems With 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

Upon review of NHTSA information, the 2017 RAV4 Hybrid had almost 200 complaints reported by owners, the most in the RAV4 Hybrid’s history. Of these complaints, problems with the vehicle’s electrical systems and brakes have caused the most issues for owners.

Owners report various issues with their RAV4 Hybrid vehicles, including faulty proximity sensors, hybrid system failure resulting in vehicle stalling, and other annoying hiccups with door locks and infotainment system. The majority of these electrical problems appear minor and mostly inconvenient.

In addition to electrical system problems, issues with the 2017 RAV4 Hybrid’s brakes were also prevalent. Owners report difficulties braking, with multiple complaints related to the brake pedal going all the way to the floor. Premature wear and tear of the RAV4’s brakes was found to be the cause of these issues.

2019-2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Gas Tanks Struggle to Fill Completely

RAV4 Hybrids have had ongoing issues with gas tanks. Numerous complaints reported to the NHTSA reveal owners of 2019-2020 RAV4s not being able to fill the gas tanks up on their vehicles to full, limiting the vehicle’s driving range.

Technically no recall has been issued by Toyota, but discovery of the problem by the automaker triggered action to fix it. Toyota found that variation of fuel tank shape and potential for the fuel sender gauge to become inclined could cause the fuel level to read incorrectly in certain 2019-2021 RAV4 Hybrids, therefore prompting a low fuel light to illuminate.

Toyota will replace the fuel tank and fuel sender gauge for owners if this condition is present.

Toyota’s RAV4 Remains a Best-seller for Many Reasons, but Certain Model Years Should be Avoided

Selling over 400,000 units since 2017, the Toyota RAV4 is a best-seller for many reasons. Despite leading the industry in efficiency, reliability, and safety, certain models have been more problematic than others.

Problems with unintended acceleration, tie rod corrosion, and seat belt separations were the most prevalent issues with 2010-2012 RAV4s, while fuel pump failure and fuel tank defects have dominated RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid’s recent history, ultimately affecting its reliability rating.

Despite these problems, the RAV4 is overall a great vehicle, earning awards from J.D. Power and Kelley Blue Book, and top safety ratings by the NHTSA and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

There Have Been Problem Ever Since I Bought The Toyota RAV4
I bought this vehicle used with 30,895 miles on 9/23/19. I’ve had nearly fatal issues with the front struts and had to change them twice and I’m up to 76,800 miles. Rear struts had to be changed regardless of being changed before being sold to me, brakes were a nightmare, I changed the brake pads and rotors in the front 3 times, rear ones twice, changed the brake fluid, front brake hoses, front calipers, and the brakes still have issues to this day. Transmission fluid flush was extremely expensive to do at Toyota but I care about my vehicle, this vehicle is costly to maintain, I keep hearing grinding noises from my front driver side wheel, the muffler has been rattling since I bought the vehicle, A/C only works well if my passenger vents are closed, while A/C is working I hear a belt noise while accelerating after being stopped, heat makes my muffler rattle, low coolant issues constantly

Battery/Electrical Issues With The Toyota RAV4
It has been in the shop 5 times in the past 4 months for battery issues. Bought in August 2019 Jan 2020 - Battery dies (bad cell according to the dealer) March 2020 - Battery dies again (bad battery according to dealer) April 2020 - battery dies (AC amplifier bad due to driver seat heater). Car at dealership 4 days. April 2020 - battery dies again a week and a half after getting it back. (AC amplifier bad due to driver seat heater again even though I hadn't used it). Car at dealership 11 days. May 2020 - battery dies again exactly one week after getting it back. Been a week and no word from dealership as to what's wrong

Strut Replaces As Soon As I Got The Toyota RAV4
Recently my left hatch strut seized and broke. I got an appt. At North Hills Toyota where I purchased my RAV 4 2015 as a new car. I also purchased the extended warranty. Much to my disbelief the parts and labor to replace both struts was $1386.00. My advisor Dave explained to me that water gets in and rusts sets in causing the strut (left) to seize and break. The right one had extensive rust and was suggested to replace as well.

Fuel Tank Issues With The Toyota RAV4
The dreaded fuel tank issue, in which no more than 10 or so gallons go in, or in extreme cases (like mine) the tank only takes THREE gallons. And the advertised 40 mpg can be as low as 26 mpg, which is what I got in my first 5k of driving. Toyota calls even extreme cases like mine “normal operating characteristics” so refuses to fix them.

Engine Problem That Has No Solution As Of Yet
My vehicle has less than 5000k. It developed groaning sounds at about 3500k. The vehicle suspension sounds as if it is 14 years old. They occur at slower speeds when turning, accelerating, and over uneven parking lots, etc. The balance of the vehicle is ok, but Toyota needs to determine the problem and fix it.

Major Transmission Issue With The Toyota RAV4
The Transmission, as you come to a stop, and slight roll, then slightly step on the accelerator, the vehicle jerks you back and forth! He Transmission doesn't freeroll, or downshift properly, or as it should. Toyota needs to come up with a software update for the transmission module to correct this problem!

Toyota RAV4: Tire And Sensor Issues
So many tire problems it's just not worth it! Bought brand new in 2015, starting having problems with the tire seals and sensors in 2018. Dealership covers the cost of repairs but the number of hours I have wasted waiting for the seal and sensor replacements causes me great regret in buying this vehicle.

The Toyota RAV 4 Can Not Handle Cold Winters
Winters are awful here. A lot of snow. The problem is I need the windshield defogger to be on the full force so we can get the rav warm and melt snow and ice off the windshield. The fan defaults to another slower setting after we use the remote starter to turn the car on in the morning.

There Are Dangerous Brake Problems With The Toyota RAV4.
I bought my car used with a lot of brake issues even though the brakes were new. The pickup speed is really slow so going from park to fast in an intersection is hard and risky. The emergency brake does not work like it should, when I use the brake my car still rolls back.

There Is A Steering And Windshield Issue
My new Rav 4 is been pulled slightly left, wheel alignment didn't help. Also, something is clearly wrong with my windshield, I can't notice distortion but my eyes getting very tired after a short drive. I don't experience it in other cars I drive. Not sure what to do.

Dangerous Issues With Brake Lights And Still No Information
I haven't used this new vehicle for more than 1 month and I'm receiving brake light warnings while driving. Contacted the dealership to diagnose the problem and I was told they will get back to me. It's been two days already, nobody has gotten back to me.

Groaning Sounds From The Engine, An Unknown Issues With Toyota RAV4
My vehicle sounds like it is 15 years old when it emits a groaning sound while turning or rolling over bumps etc. It is now 7 months old and a fix still appears nowhere in sight. My dealer’s service manager says he’s awaiting a fix from head office.

Transfer Case Problem With No Fix
Barely 3 months old, experiencing noise and rough shifting/jerky motion off the start. Took it into the dealer Toyota is apparently aware of a problem with the transfer case and currently has no fix. I'd expect way more from a brand new Toyota.

The Toyota RAV 4 Has A Loud Squealing Engine Issue
It makes a loud squealing noise when accelerating and coming to a stop at 30 km/hour, extremely annoying. This has been going on for 9 months without resolution. It is not just my vehicle. It can develop into a major engine problem.
